Lost Communications With Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Module

The throttle actuator control (TAC) module and the powertrain control module (PCM) communicate via a dedicated serial data circuit. This serial data circuit is separate from any other serial data circuit on the vehicle. Accurate transmitting and receiving of serial data requires not only good circuit integrity, but also adequate system voltage. This diagnostic test monitors the accuracy of the serial data transmitted between the TAC module and the PCM. If the PCM detects a loss of data or invalid data, this DTC sets.

Diagnostic Aids
Important: Reprogramming the PCM may cause a communication error between the PCM and the TAC. If the PCM detects a communication error, DTC U0107 sets. Clear any DTCs from the memory that may have been set by Reprogramming.
• DTC U0107 sets if the battery voltage is low. If the customer's concern is slow cranking or no crank because battery voltage is low, ignore DTC U0107. Clear any DTCs from memory that may have set from the low battery voltage condition.
• DTC U0107 sets when there is a short to B+ on the TAC module ground circuit. Inspect the fuses for the circuits that are in the TAC module harness--i.e. cruise, brake. An inspection of the fuses may lead you to the circuit that is shorted to the TAC module ground circuit.
Replace the TAC module. Refer to Electronic Throttle Actuator Control Module Replacement .

The throttle actuator control (TAC) module is the control center for the throttle actuator control system. The TAC system is self-diagnosing and provides diagnostic information to the powertrain control module (PCM) through a dedicated serial data line. The TAC achieves throttle positioning by providing a pulse width modulated voltage to the TAC, as directed by the PCM.
The data link connector (DLC) allows a scan tool to communicate with the class 2 serial data line. The serial data line is the means by which the microprocessor-controlled modules in the vehicle communicate with each other. Once the scan tool is connected to the class 2 serial data line through the DLC, the scan tool can be used to monitor each module for diagnostic purposes and to check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Class 2 serial data is transmitted on a single wire at an average of 10.4 kbps. This value is an average, class 2 uses a variable pulse width modulation to carry data and depending on the message it may operate faster or slower. The bus will float at a nominal 7 volts during normal operation. Each module can pull this lower during the transmission. The bus is not at battery positive voltage or ground potential during normal operation. When the ignition switch is in RUN, each module communicating on the class 2 serial data line sends a state of health (SOH) message every 2 seconds to ensure that the module is operating properly. When a module stops communicating on the class 2 serial data line, for example if the module loses power or ground, the SOH message it normally sends on the data line every 2 seconds disappears. Other modules on the class 2 serial data line, which expect to receive that SOH message, detect its absence; those modules in turn set an internal DTC associated with the loss of SOH of the non-communicating module. The DTC is unique to the module which is not communicating, for example, when the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) SOH message disappears, several modules set DTC U1088. Note that a loss of serial data DTC does not normally represent a failure of the module that set it.

I have a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, and I recently had a print out done on my vehicle. I'm not understanding these codes: aa1 poor connection at the TAC module, aa2 failed TAC module, aa3 check TPP or TP


I always ask---If you went to the trouble to have
it scanned & get a nice print out & I would assume
asked all these questions at the shop,then why
did you not leave it,to be further component tested
& issue resolved?

The drive by wire motor that opens the throttle
body plate

TPS Sensor--throttle position sensor on the same

Try spraying some CRC Throttle Body Cleaner in
there around the throttle plate

After that you need to have to tps sensor tested
I wouldn't be in a hurry to change a throttle body,
they cost hundreds & the codes don't tell you it's bad

The only time you replace a throttle body is if you can not
get the motor by it's self

Well, those codes definately are related to why your vehicle will no longer accelerate!

P2107 is "Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Module Processor"
This code means that the TAC portion of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has failed the self-test.

Posiible causes:
> TAC motor circuit harness shorted to ground
> TAC motor circuit harness shorted to voltage
> Damage Electronic Throttle Body (ETB)
> Damaged PCM

P2110 is "Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Forced Limited RPM"

This code is informational only. It sets in conjunction with other throttle actuator control codes (like P2107 above). It is just letting you know that the PCM is limiting RPM due to a TAC malfunction, (So it doesn't do a "TOYOTA" on you and run away!"

DTC P1516 - Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Module Throttle Actuator Position Performance

Circuit Description (click over pic for zoom)
The commanded throttle position, based on accelerator pedal position and possibly other limiting factors, is compared to the Actual throttle position. The 2 values should be within a calibrated range of each other. Both the PCM and the TAC module redundantly monitor the Commanded and Actual throttle position. This DTC sets if the TAC module detects the problem.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
1. DTC P1518 is not set.
2. The ignition switch is in the crank or run position.
3. The ignition voltage is greater than 5.23 volts.
4. Not in battery saver mode.
5. The TAC module detects that the commanded and actual throttle positions are not within a calibrated range of each other or the PCM and the TAC cannot determine throttle position or both TP sensors are invalid.
6. All above conditions met for less than 1 second.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
1. The PCM will illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) when this diagnostic runs and fails.
2. The Reduced Engine Power message displays on the drivers information center.
3. The PCM records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The PCM stores this information in the Freeze Frame and/or Failure Records.
4. If no other TAC System DTCs are set, the TAC System will operate in Reduced Engine Power mode. If certain TAC System DTCs are set at the same time, the TAC System either defaults to a more tightly restricted mode of operation if the TAC determines that limited safe operation is possible, or the TAC commands the engine to shut down.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
1. The PCM turns the MIL OFF after three consecutive drive trips that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.
2. A last test failed (Current DTC) will clear when the diagnostic runs and does not fail.
3. A History DTC clears after forty consecutive warm-up cycles, if this or any other emission related diagnostic does not report any failures.
4. The PCM battery voltage is interrupted.
5. Important
* The clear DTC info function may have to be performed twice in order to clear a Throttle Actuator Control System DTC.
* Clear the MIL/DTC information using a scan tool.

Diagnostic Aids
The following may cause an intermittent:
1. Poor connections. Check for adequate terminal tension. Refer to Troubleshooting Procedures, Checking Terminal Contact (Body and Accessories/Wiring Systems) for proper procedure.
2. Corrosion
3. Mis-routed harness
4. Rubbed through wire insulation
5. Broken wire inside the insulation
6. Inspect the TAC module connectors for signs of water intrusion. When this occurs, multiple DTCs should be set and no circuit or component problems can be located.

1. For an intermittent condition refer to Symptoms .
2. If a repair is completed and the DTC was cleared using a scan tool on the same ignition cycle, the default action will not clear until an ignition cycle has occurred.
3. When the TAC module detects a problem within the TAC System, more than one TAC System related DTC may set. This is due to the many redundant tests run continuously on this system. Locating and repairing one individual problem may correct more than one DTC. Keep this in mind when reviewing captured DTC info.

Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

5. If the TP Indicated Angle does not follow the movement of the throttle blade, and no TP Sensor DTCs are set, there is a mechanical problem with the throttle shaft or the TP Sensor. Replace the throttle body assembly. Re-install the air inlet duct after you complete the repairs.

21. When a problem is detected within the TAC System, more than one TAC System related DTC may set. This is due to the many redundant tests run continuously on this system. It is possible that locating and repairing one individual problem may correct more than one DTC. Keep this in mind when reviewing captured DTC info.
