The ground wire that is short and goes to the car body connects to the terminal by the starter motor (terminal that also has a wire going inside the motor).

Big red wire (from battery) goes to the big terminal opposite to the ground wire terminal and farthest from the starter motor.

Smaller wire (from ignition switch) goes to the small terminal.

I need a diagram for d6r starter motor connected to the battery outside the machine

place the starter in a good vice or clamp it securely to a bench
attach the ground wire from the battery to the mounting flange of the starter body
attach the positive terminal to the positive terminal big terminal post that has no wire going inside the housing
touch the very small terminal to the positive terminal post to energize the solenoid and spin the starter
the body has to be firmly clamped or the motor will spin off the bench

Hi, I got dodge nitro 2.8 year 2009. I try to switch the ignition on to start it. It couldn't start. The lights all comes on desk board. But can't start it. Any idea how o can start it.

Hi. Could be a few things. Do the dash lights dim when you try to crank/start the car. If so the battery might have charge but not enough to turn the starter motor over. If not then you need to check your starter motor out first. you can check yourself with a multi meter or test light either of which a local car parts supplier will stock from around £10 upwards. you need to check you have good battery voltage to the big cable on the starter solenoid that is mounted on the starter motor first( there will be two big terminals -one with a wire coming into it from the loom(you want that one) and one that has a short wire going into the main body of the starter(don't want that one), Then you will have a small wire from the loom going to another smaller terminal next to that - that's your crank/start wire and it should have good battery voltage when you try to start your car. WITH YOUR CAR OUT OF GEAR and the ignition on if you can link the two terminals together for a second or two the starter should operate. Jon

I didnt take the starter off,so i dont know where the wires go

Most starter motors are set up with 2 big terminals on the solenoid and 2 push on connections between them. One big terminal will have a wire from it going into the motor body and the other will be the one you put the battery lead on. AS to the push on terminals fit on terminal on and touch the starter with the switch if it works ok if not put the wire on the other one and retest. If still in doubt get an auto electrical shop to show you which is which

Need wiring diagram for fender mounted starter solinoid. removed solinoid for exchange but had to order so now cannot remember wich wires go where

Didn't get your model and year. The big wires go one on each side, and it doesn't really matter which side, except if there are more than 2 big wires, and extras go on the same side as the battery wire. The wire to the starter should be by itself on the solenoid terminal. The start wire from the ignition switch goes to the small "S" terminal. If there are more wires for the small terminals, I'll need to know your model and year to tell you where they go. If the car has a ballast resistor, you will have a wire from the solenoid to the ignition coil.

How do I mount the harness to the starter?

I assume you have a later model that has the solenoid on the starter. If not, please get back to me.

1. Make sure the negative battery cable is removed from the battery.

2. Big black wire goes to big terminal nearest the starter that also has a short cable going into the starter.

3. Smaller wire (from ignition switch) goes on smaller terminal in the middle.

4. Big red wire goes to big terminal farthest from the starter motor.

If this doesn't make sense, please get back to me.

Turned key on,lights on ignition go like its aflat battery but not, lights go on ok,told it could be starter motor, took starter motor out an use battery to test it while it was starter out of...

Easier to test in the car. Put starter back in the car. First, please try to jump start the car. If it will jump and start, starter is OK. If it will not jump start, go to the starter with a screwdriver. Use the screwdriver to short the big red-wire terminal to the small terminal on the solenoid. Be very careful not to short the big red-wire terminal to anything else, or you will get a big spark. If the battery, starter, and solenoid are good, the car will crank. If it does not crank, try again while jumping the battery to another car. If it cranks, the battery is low or the terminals need to be cleaned and tightened. If you have more questions, please reply.
