Question about 2006 Chevrolet HHR
This is a VERY common problem. The ultimate answer is to have the ignition switch replaced. In the meantime, you'll need to be able to get that key out. On the bottom side of the steering column there is a one inch square rubber plug that you pry out. You can then use your pointer finger to push the switch in. This will release the lock and let you turn your key to the off position and remove. You may want to leave this plug out as you'll be doing this a lot until it is repaired.

Have a 2007 hhr that the key was stuck in the ignition. found the solution to the problem on youtube. remedy was to change the gear shift box for about $150 at the dealer, or you mechanic plus labor. the switch has a metal rod that contacts a switch and it comes loose and falls out of plastic keeper. I reached in and pushed up on the switch and key cam right out.

Same story. I ordered a piece of .250" dia Delrin rod from McMaster Carr and built a replacement rod. It works great and is string and slippery. It cost me a few bucks. It's really not that hard of a job to do. The hardest thing was finding the right material. Delrin is the best. It's very slippery and strong. The end that mates to the sring I made a little larger by heating up a steel flat blade and melting the end to make it a litle bigger to make sure the spring wouldn't ride over the rod. The end that mates to the pistol grip shifter I cut a slot parallel with the hole I drilled for the rod. This way I can use a snall screwdriver to rotate the shaft to align the hole with the rod for installation.

start with the shifter. a common problem is the shifter is not making connection with the switch to tell the car its in park. jar ( hit) the shifter some and see if this doesnt let the key release. if this doesnt work then on plastic covering under the ignition switch is a small opening with a plastic cover. Remove the cover, feel with your finger until you find the release button for the key. The key will then come out.

You may want to try pushing fordward harder into the park position while turning the key to the off position. The locking cable may need adjustment. If this does not work, try turning the collar just behind the keyswitch counter clockwise while trying to remove the key. Thanks, Dana

replace the floor shifter. there is a switch on the shifter that allows the key to move. gm has had alot of problems with these shifters.

sound like your steering wheel lock is engaged.... just give the wheel a hard tug when your turning the key... and what did you mean by "the key isnt stuck"?
