It could be a lot of things, but remove the drive belt to check all the pulleys to see if they turn freely. If so,then If then engine still will not turn,by hand ,then remove the timing cover and check the timing chain and gears,if it is not in there then the engine will have an enternal problem.

Help: need to install a belt on a 1995 pontiac bonneville

Hey Liv. You have to place a floor jack under the engine oil pan and support the engine. Now you have to remove the engine mount on the passenger end of the engine. you will need a 18mm wrench and some inverted torx bit sockets as the lower stud has to be removed to allow the mount to be removed. The two 18mm bolts will be really tight and should be tightened so when reinstalled. Remove the long bolt that goes thru the mount horizontally also. now you can remove the belt with the 18mm wrench on the tensioner. study the belt routing and remove it. install the new belt and reinstall the mount in reverse order. good luck and don't get hurt loosening the bolts. use gloves if you can.

see if you can turn the motor with a ratchet or breaker bar and socket, if you cannot turn it relatively easy you may have a locked up engine, if you can turn it then replace the starter anyway, bench testing is not an accurate way of telling what a component will do when installed in the vehicle. the louder the "clunk" the higher the likelyhood of the locked up motor

Battery had bad cell, replaced battery with new 700 cold cranking amps, starter seems locked want or cant turn engine over, bad starter or what? 88000 original miles!

Check the battery cables for corrosion that may have eaten through the wire. Measure the voltage at the battery posts--should read 12.6 volts--if not, charge the battery overnight with a low rate (4-8 amps) charger. If the battery won't charge, take it back for another unit. If the starter was working before, it should still work if it is getting proper voltage.

do you fill the gas tank with the key on?

Try disconnecting the battery for 1/2 hour an then reconnect and drive for 10 miles. It may run rough for this period. This will clear codes from memory.
