If the cap was loose then just drive around and the light should go out in a week or so depending on how many start/stop cycles you do. You could disconnect the neg battery but that would mess with other things, sooo just be patient. The light will go out on its own after the computer is satisfied there is no leak. A scanner can reset the light.

Check the gas cap and make sure it is tight, if cross threaded or the seal is bad the light will kick on. Hope this helps.

P0445 on my 2003 hyundai tiburon Gt evap

This code's description is P0455 Evap Emission System- Large Leak. Usually ,arge leak means you drove or still driving your vehicle with loose or missing gas cap. Check your gas cap if it is tight. Even if that is the case , tightening it might not turn the check engine light off. So you have to erase the code with a scanner. If your gas cap is in place and tight then you probably have a leak in the emission system which includes numerous parts. So it should be inspected by a proffesional.

P0172 fault code

It could be an emmissions problem. Sometimes even the gas cap being loose can cause a code. Make sure to tighten the cap when done refuelling...you should hear repetitive clicks when its tight. Other components related to code p0172 are o2 sensor(bank 1) and catalytic converters. Hope this helps!

2009 Mazda 5 check engine light after loose gas cap

If the code would have been due to the cap problem then the code will go away. Try resetting the code. Also try diagnosing again after disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting it after a few minutes.

Check engine light 2007 dodge grand caravan

Most common problem is a loose or defective gas cap. If it is not tightened properly it can set a code.
Once you tighten or replace the cap, the light should go out after about 100 miles of driving.
You can check engine codes using a free loaner scanner at Autozone parts store, etc.

Good luck, Gary

My check engine light came on code P0446; dashboard says "check gas cap" i took it off retightened it and check engine light still on. I noticed that the metal flap for the gas nozzle is...

The metal flap should not trigger the sensor. Once you tighten the gas cap you should clear the code and see if it comes back. Otherwise it will take a while to go away.
If it does come back even though the gas cap is tight it could be the rubber seal around the gas cap replacing that can sometimes fix this issue also.

How long can you safely drive the car when the "check engine" light is on. My gas cap was loose and I tightened it but don't know how long it will take for the light to go out.

It may take 40 or 50 cycles of turning the car on and off to clear the code. Or, use a scan tool to clear the code after tightening the loose gas cap.

If the code doesn't go away, on the next start, then there may be another leak in the gas tank or filler neck areas that simulates a loose gasoline cap.

Good luck on getting the check engine light to go out.

Checkenginelight came on tonite on my 2003 bmw 325i I also tighten my gas cap to be sure it wasn't that was causing the light to come on.

What you need to do is have a shop pull the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CODES from tne cars computor. Once codes are known the diagnostics proceures must be perform to determine what of the engine circuits caused the light to come on. Once repairs are done then the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT can be reset.

I think someone loosened my gas cap on my 07 silverado, would like to know if there is a way to reset engine light.

Once you tighten the gas cap the engine light will reset itself after it has gone threw the necessary drive cycles, but only if the problem has been fixed. So yes if the check engine light came on for the reason of a loose gas cap, once you tighten it it will go off on its own.
