1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Logo

I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 and there is grease on the left front axle near the brake . The boot was replaced 20000 miles ago and it isn't torn. It appears that the outboard part of the boot isn't seated on the housing. Can I grease the CV and put a clamp aroung the end of the boot?

HI, yes you can add some grease and get a clamp for the boot. They sell replacement clamps at your local parts store for these boots. thanks for using Fixya

How do replace front axle bearings on a 92 jeep

You have to pull off the wheel, brake assembly, and rotor. If it is a 4x4, i suggest you take it to a mechanic. If it isn't, once you pull all that off you will see a little cap cover. take a small screwdriver and pop off the cap. There will be a clip. pull off the clip and pull out the axle bearing. Make sure you grease the axle bearings before you put the new one in. Then put it back together in the reverse of these instructions. Hope this helps.

Problem near the wheels on a Jeep Cherokee

If you Jeep is equipped with CV axles ( I can't tell b/c I don't see a year model or if it's a standard Cherokee or a Grand Cherokee, or even if it's 4x4), then he may have been referring to your CV axle boots. They are rubber boots that keep grease inside so as to lube the CV joint. It also keep the road grime and gunk out.

If the rubber boot cracks, then yes, stuff will get in there and it'll make it worse.

It's possible he could have been talking about the inside wheel well lining also. It's a little hard to tell according to the description. But if it's fallen it's possible it may not make noise in reverse, but only in drive. And yes, when it breaks it'll allow road stuff to get up in the front fender and make it rust out.

Both of these projects are pretty advanced, especially the CV boot.

Cv boot replacement on a 1999 grand cherokee 4x4 6 cilinder

I think that a boot replacement is beter off done by a mechanic.
You have to remove the brake caliper then the hub assy. then remove the axle shaft then remove the cv joint from the shaft, install the boot and grease and install in reverse order.

Remove the brake parts tie the brake caliper out of the way, break loose the tie rod and lower ball joint, move the steering knuckle out of the way, pull the axle straight out with a sharp snap motion.
