Question about 2005 Ford Freestyle

1 Answer

CVT Tranny Hows the reliability of the CVT Tranny used in the Ford Freestyle, and Five Hundred? I'm in the used car business and I'm not familiar with this tranny. I'm really tempted to get an 05 Freestyle 2WD with 80k. It uses a CVT. I've looked over online, finding that this tranny is reliable. Anyone know for sure? How about for service? I believe these don't use tranny dipsticks to check the fluid ( A growing trend among Auto makers lately) . Or does it require the dealer?

I work at a Ford dealer and we have seen very little trouble with this trans-axle. We replaced a mectronics unit in one and replaced one complete assembly, other then that we have had no trouble with them and personally would have no fear of buying one.

I have a 2006 Ford Five Hundred and the transmission is slipping. I need to be able to check the transmission fluid to see if it is low. How to I check the transmission fluid?

You may not be able to really. Some of these have dipsticks and some do not. CVT transmissions do not but some 6 speed transmissions do. If you do have one it should be near the air filter box. IF you have one....put the vehicle in park and start it up. Leave it running at an idle for several minutes until its good and hot. While it is running and hot, pull the stick and check the level. (be very careful) Fluid should be red in color and at the point on the stick where is says warm. If it is brown, you have trouble, if it is low, you have trouble. ie leak. Either way you look at it. ANY time a tranny slips it DOES cause further damage. I recommend a tranny shop

Can I change the filter and fluid in my 2006 ford 500 myself and what atf fluid should i use? Thanks

You have a CVT transmission. It is a specific CVT fluid that is green. You really shouldn't so it yourself, because the filt plug is under the battery and it is extremely small, too small for a standard funnel.
