Question about Oldsmobile Cutlass

1 Answer

Hi I have a 98 olds cutlas and i have a problem with the rpms bouncing around and it was doing it very badly at first like every second so i scaned the code on the lite that came on and it said crank shaft position sensior so im ok with cars so i replaced the sensor and i also said what the hell why not replace the harmonic balincer to,put it all back together and it helped it like 80% but it still does it and now the check engine lite does not come on,the rpms drop every min now when it was doing it every sec so it did something but still have a problem, and i also replaced the spark pluges and wires so if you know what this might be please email me back thanks.

Possible coil pack on one or more of the cylinders. A code may not show up if a coil pack is bad.

Good luck on this repair.

Rpms rough

That kind of engine speed change is usually caused by a vacuum leak, most likely around the intake manifold.

89/98 olds. regency. its runs for awhile and then shuts off. it also backfires through the exhaust at high rpms

Probably timing. Aim a timing light at your crankshaft, and see if the mark is jumping back and forth irradically. It should be staying in one spot. If it's jumping around, your timing chain has jumped a cog.
If not the timing, then it's probably bad wires or improper firing order .

Rpms bounce up and down while accelerating

When bouncing, does the engine speed go up and down. If not, the gauge may be bad, or if the engine sounds like it speeds up, try cleaning the throttle body by spraying throttle body cleaner into the intake/throttle and wipe clean with a clean cloth. Do this 2x's. You will have to remove the intake pipe that connects to the filter box and intake. After cleaning this, it may seem hard to start for a second, it's because of the cleaner. Don't worry it will start.
