The rear brakes have a self-adjusting mechanism that does not require adjustment for proper drum to shoe clearance when brake shoe has been replaced or brake drum has been removed for some other service.
Adjustment is automatically accomplished by depressing brake pedal 3–5 times after all parts are installed. Then check brake drum for dragging and brake system for proper performance.

Unless you have replaced the cable, it should never need to be adjusted. If you can reach under the vehicle, and when wiggling the parking brake cable, if it is taut (not sagging), then it is probably adjusted properly. What usually causes the parking brake cable to appear mis-adjusted (the parking brake won't hold the vehicle), is that the self-adjusters in the rear drum brakes are not working properly. This is bad because it means that you are not getting proper braking from the rear brakes as well as having the parking brake issue. This can cause premature wear to the front disc brake pads/rotors and affect braking power and control under certain stopping conditions. Front disc brakes work so well that many people never realize that their rear brakes aren't doing their fair share. The purpose of the self-adjusters in the drum brakes is to keep the rear brake shoes at a consistent distance from the drum's inner surface as the shoe lining wears down. If the adjuster works correctly, the parking brake will always stay in adjustment. You CAN adjust the parking brake cable, but if the problem is actually with the self-adjuster, you are masking the real problem, and later on when you need to replace the rear brake shoes, you will find it impossible to put the drum back on over the shoes as the parking brake will have the shoes pushed out too far. Have a mechanic check out the self-adjuster mechanism. It is always a good idea whenever you replace the rear brake shoes to replace all the rear brake hardware as well. You don't replace rear brakes nearly as often as the front ones, and the cost of the hardware is minimal in relation to the satisfaction of knowing that non-corroded parts will work better and provide longer service than the older, gummed-up and rusted hardware that is currently installed.

How do you adjust the rear drum breaks on a 1990 Ford Laser Hatchback

to adjust the brakes --- at the bottom of the drum housing ( twords the inside of the car ) there should be a little oblong rubber cover. pop that cover off and you will see a gear looking wheel adjuster,, using a flathead screw driver rotate the wheel -- in one direction it will advance the shoes and in the other direction it will decrease the shoes. make sure the parking brake is off while you make the adjustment -- also make sure the side you are working on is jacked up off the ground so you can spin the wheel / hub to get the brake shoes in the right position. you should not hear any rubbing of the brakes as the drum spins. -- I find it best to turn the gear adjuster just to the point where the shoes start to grab,, then back off a couple clicks --- repeat on the other side and you should be good to go. hope this helps --

1998 ford escort se hand brake need adjusting. doesn't hold.

Try to adjust the rear brakes tighter at the shoes, if you have drum brakes. May require taking the drum off and adjusting the adjuster. Or, adjusting it from the backing plate access hole if there is one.

Be sure to check the cables to make sure they are not broken anywhere between the hand brake lever and the back brakes.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drum.
  4. Using a brake adjusting gauge, measure the inside diameter of the brake
  5. Compare the brake drum measurement to the brake shoes.
  6. Adjust the brake shoes by inserting a brake adjustment tool into the knurled
    quadrant of the rear quad operating lever and adjust the shoes to the same
    measurement as the brake drum.
  7. Install the brake drum.
  8. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Check the brake system operation by making several stops while driving
    slowly forward.

How do i adjust the drum brakes

If you're to the point of taking the drums off then find the star adjuster. It will have threads and a wheel with teeth on it. the wheel with teeth is the adjuster. It should only move one way in the expanding direction. Turn it a few clicks and put the drum back on. Check drag by spinning the drum, and checking park brake lever travel. Be careful not to over tighten or you can burn your brakes up. NO GOOD!! Hope this helps.

How do you remove the rear brake drums

  1. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
    1. One way to remove the drum is to tap the drum lightly with a mallet to free the drum if resistance is felt. Sometimes brake drums are stubborn. If the drum is difficult to remove, perform the following:
    1. Insert the end of a bent wire (a coat hanger will do nicely) through the hole in the brake drum and hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjuster.
    2. Reduce the brake shoe adjustment by turning the adjuster bolt with a brake adjuster tool. The drum should now be loose enough to remove without much effort.

    Just replaced rear brake shoes--parking brake feels like it is not tight enough when engagaed--

    The brake shoes need adjusting. Disengage the parking brake.
    Before fitting new shoes you should slack off the parking brake cable completely. Locate the adjuster(just follow the parking brake cable. Undo the locknut and slack off the cable.
    Remove the rear wheels and drums again. You will find a screw-in type adjuster between the shoes. Turn the adjuster to increase the distance between the shoes. The left and right wheel's adjusters turn in opposite directions to achieve the same result. Fit the drum to see if it slides over the pads easily. Do so until you start having diffyculty sliding the drum over the shoes. Fit the drum and rotate it. You should not hear any scraping or have any resistance on the drum when it is rotated. Refit the wheels. Test the parking brake. If it is still too slack adjust the cable under the car until you when you engage the parking brake it engages fully after 3-5 clicks.

    Brake drums

    the brake shoes are likely stuck in the grooves worn into the drum. You need to back off the brake shoe adjusting wheel to loosen the brake shoes.
    Also, the face of the drum usually has a couple of threaded holes you can screw bolts into to help pull the drums toward you.

    First, hit all the way around the brake drum with a big hammer to loosen the drum from the center hub.
    Then, istall the screws to help pull the drum.

    to back off the adjuster with a screwdriver:

    1. NOTE: If the brake drum will not come off, follow these steps.
    2. Loosen the brake shoe adjusting screw nut (2047).
    3. Using a screwdriver, move the brake shoe adjusting lever (2A176) off the brake adjuster screw (2041).
    4. NOTE: Move the adjustment tool handle downward to loosen the brake shoe adjusting screw nut.
      Use the Brake Adjustment Tool to loosen the brake shoe adjusting screw nut.
