Question about 1994 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

My truck is a 1994 with a V6, the power comes on when you turn the key on and then when you try to start it it just clicks 1 time on the starter and then everything goes dead. It has a good battery and alternator and the starter is good as well

I cleaned the termials and re ran new starter wires b/c the old ones were pretty bad and still no change. I had the solenoid tested when i tested the alternator and it was good. Seems like its a bad ignition switch. Im trying to trace it down now.

Sounds like a bad connection. Clean and tighten battery terminals and let us know if that doesn't work. Could also be solenoid.

Ok, here's a way to verify the starter and solenoid, but you have to be careful. Make sure the car is in park or neutral with the brake set. Take a screwdriver and use it to short the big red-wire solenoid terminal to the small ignition wire terminal, being careful not to touch anything else with the screwdriver. The motor should crank if its good.
If yes, then backup and check the starter relay and fuse, if you have one. Should be in the relay box under the hood. The last thing you want to have to replace is the ignition switch, as that is a real pain. Keep me posted with any more questions.

Turn the key to run, but don't start the engine. If the clicking continues, unhook the small wire from the starter. If the clicking stops, you have a short causing power to pulse to the starter control wire, possible bad ignition switch.

1994 bmw e36 320i engine won't turn over or and no clicking sound coming from starter when i turn the ignition but all the light comes on what could be the problem,

The starter won't crank. If nothing happens when you turn the ignition key to the "Start" position, it means that the starter motor doesn't turn over the engine. Most commonly this could be caused by a dead battery; here is How to check the battery. ... The starter motor itself or a starter solenoid could be bad.13 Aug 2013

Car wont start...sometimes

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid, usually cheapest and easiest to replace the starter and solenoid as a unit. It is always best to check for power between the solenoid and the starter with a test light, if the solenoid clicks but the test light doesn't light up you have found the problem in the solenoid.

Makes clicking noise on the firewall by battery -will not start

that clicking sound coming is off the starter cylinoyde. there is two big red wires connected from both sides and if cylinodye clicking you might have a problem with your starter but let somebody help you out by sitting and turning the key forward and keep clicking untill you check power on both sides of the cylinoyde if power coming on both sides cylinodye is ok the problem is the starter. if there is no power on one side of cylinoyde the problem is the cylinoyde and is very cheap about nine dollars.
