Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

3 Answers

Why won't my '98 Chevy Malibu start, it just clicks??? YET, it HAS POWER!? I have a '98 Chevy Malibu. We turned it off after driving for about 5 minutes that day, came back 5 minutes later and it acted like it had a dead battery ... it just clicked. I got another car to jump start it and nothing changed ... but while the hood was up I noticed that when you turn the key and it simply clicks, a small puff of white smoke climbs from the lower side of the engine (maybe close to the starter?) After the other car gave up, I noticed that we actually had power without them hooked up (the lights came on with the key turned, fan ran strong, etc.) Why won't it start? Should I tap the starter with a hammer? ~> in that case, where is it? One note ... we did have a dead battery the day before this from leaving the car to the on position overnight! Our neighbor jump-started with his truck and we drove that day for 3-4 hours. 2 minutes ago - 4 days left to answer. Additional Details new starter put in a chop 3 months ago & new fuel pump put in 2 months ago!

You can still have enough power to turn on the lights, but not enough to crank the starter. I suspect it's either a bad battery or dirty or loose battery cables.

Load test the Battery if it has a weak cell it will appear ok until a heavy draw is needed. Does your dash lights go out when you turn the key and come back on when you release it a sure sign of a weak cell.

You know the 97 to 04 Malibu is noted for intake manifold leaking antifreeze into the engine. A little antifreeze in a cylinder can keep the piston from moving in compression stroke. Take a look at the spark plugs, see if any of them have antifreeze on them and maybe the starter will spin the crank with the plugs out.

Inspect the old ignition cycle which is out.Is there any problem noticed of Ignition cylinder getting worn out.
Because when issue of ignition not turning off,its faulty ignition lock cylinder or faulty ignition switch.I suggest re-inspect the new ignition cylinder.

Hi I own A 98 Chevy Malibu, my ignition locked n i had to put a new ignition switch in, well now my cars tellin me Something Theft Service. Im wonder what I need to do? Iv unhooked battery for hours ect...

You need to reset the theft system. To do this, try to start it. It should start and die. Then after it dies and the theft light is flashing, leave the key on for 10 minutes. After 10 min, the theft light should go out. After the theft light goes out, turn off the key. Count to 5, then restart it. Then it should work.

My 98 Chevy Malibu v6 3.1 liter engine high idling

You probably have a large vacuum leak. With the engine running, listen under the hood for a hissing sound. Check all of the rubber lines running from the intake.

Hello, It sounds as if the theft deterrent system is tripped. Look at the key is it worn bad? If so get a new one made at the dealer. To do a key test isert the key, turn to start and release if theft light comes on leave key alone in the on position ten minutes after you try to start never turn off after you yurn to start it puts it in a certain mode, and do not bother it for about 12 minutes. When you come back to car turn switch off then turn to start and it should start thank you. Please rate this answer, thank you.
