Question about 2003 GMC Envoy

1 Answer

Replaced '03 GMC Envoy fan clutch BUT still have problem. Last year I asked my service shop to replace the (electric version) fan clutch to eliminate its activating at inappropriate times (cool weather, cold engine start up, in my garage on 1st crank of the day, etc) . They did but I continue to have the same problem with the fan clutch kicking in at inappropriate times causing significant power drain from the engine. I bought this SUV new from the dealership and use it only for commuting to work. For the 1st 4 years / 100,000 miles the fan clutch only engaged under high temp Texas summertime conditions ex: after I stopped to visit a mall or office and was re-starting a very hot engine. What event or which system signals this electric fan clutch to engage and is it adjustable?

The temperature switch triggers the electric clutch fan and is normally located on top of the thermostat housing. It has 2 or 3 prongs and the plug from the clutch fan connects to it, you can find it by locating the wire from the clutch fan and following it to the motor. Its a common failure point it is however not adjustable, but you might be able to get one that does not switch on when the temperature gets to a certain heat, maybe a hotter one or colder one, the best bet would be to ask main dealer if they do this type, or your one could just be faulty and need replacing hope this helps

How much should I expect to pay to have the fan clutch and thermostat replaced in my 2004 Envoy?

The parts prices are $36 thermostat and depending on fan clutch model $88 - $260 From autoparts warehouse site
which leaves $580 for draining system and replacing parts and refilling system plus time a bit steep

02 envoy, 6 cyl, loud wooshing noise when engine is cold. fan clutch seems fully engaged. goes away when engine warms up. is this normal or does fan clutch need replaced

Fan clutches for Envoys and Trailblazer are a problem, they go out all the time.

However, it is normal for it to do this when cold, but will only stay engaged for maybe 15 seconds AFTER you've put it in gear and have started to drive. After this, it will disengage and allow the engine to warm up faster.

If you haven't already replaced the fan clutch once, you're lucky. 2002 is especially bad for the clutches, but all years don't last long. Mine lasted 90k which is pretty long.

There a lot of aftermarket fan clutches out there that just don't hold up. Purchase either a GM part or a Dorman replacement.

1 have 03 envoy,6cyl,have replaced viscouis fan,fan still runs a lot, dealer has checked twice all ok

Do you have the check engine light on? If a fault code of P1481 or P1484 is coming up with a scanner, the fan clutch is bad.

Just replaced thermostat and now my fan clutch runs continuously

Kirkasmann, P1481 is most definitely your fan clutch, it's very common on our platform. Only wires to check is the connection on the drivers side shroud. You said replaced "again"?. I've had bad ones out of the box, or it would tick tick tick. Buy a lifetime warrantly fan clutch for this reason, plus it's easy to do (as long as you cut a notch in the top of the shroud where the upper radiator hose is).

You need to find a shop with a Tech 2 scanner. The pcm has to be recalibrated because when the fan clutch goes bad it back feeds into the computer and stores a hard code. And because the 02 is the first year for this style envoy its a pos! And these A**Holes from GM thought it was a good idea to have a electronic throttle body and gas peddle.

So in a nutshell it needs to have a PCM.AZ UPDATE AND YOUR DONE! SELL IT AND BUY SOMETHING YOU CAN FIX IN YOUR BACKYARD ON THE WEEKEND!
