Question about 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88

1 Answer

Missfire This car has a bad miss when first started when cold. It idles rough and sometimes dies, surging up and down. After it runs a while it clears out and idles up at a normal rate. Then I will start to feel a little miss, and the idle gets low going down the road and it loses power. It always starts back up and goes on. It has 188000 miles, new plugs, air filter, fuel filter and fuel injection cleaner run through. The check Engine light has flashed on and off for a year or more. Do you have any suggestions?

I had a miss fire on the number 4 wire. I replaced all the plugs. Still had miss fire. I replaced all the wires. Still had the miss fire. I then replaced the coil pack for number 4. No miss fire now, but after the car runs for awhile, when you shut if off and then restart it and put it in gear, it jumps and feels like it is miss firing. I can put the car back in park or neutral and the jumping will stop. The car runs fine now but what is causing this jumping?

Locate you computer (right front kick panel) and tap on it with a pen while the car idles... Also flex it back and forth with your hands to see if the car runs rough or quits... You may need a new one.

My 2004 f-150 5.4 liter missfires on cylinders 5, 6 & 8. new plugs were installed one month ago. what could be the problem?

noby mentioned bad injectors
they are as important as plugs and are the principle causes for misfires

pull and clean the injectors and use a quality injector cleaner

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

97 3.9 dakota when it's cold outside and I start my truck it'll start right up but idle down til it quits . Start it again and it will idle.. Go down the road and it misses bad until it warms up. After it...

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, rough idle esp when cold and stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

sounds like u need 2 go over the whole ingnition system. unless u can isolate missfire down to one cilynder u may need 2 change rotor arm dizzy cap leads & plugs but maybe first start with a compression test 2 make sure rings&valves are ok and its not a low compression miss.sometimes it can be cheaper 2 have mechanic put car on a tune scope good luck
