Actually it should be fairly easy. First locate the upper radiator hose. Trace it away from the radiator toward the eingine. You should come to a peice of housing that has two bolts. Remove the radiator hose. Undo the two bolts of the housing and the thermastat will be inside. Most likely there will be a gasket holding it into the housing. Remove the gasket and the thermostat. Clean the area well to have a nice clean surface. Clean the engine side as well. Insert the new thermostat into the housing and apply the gasket. Bolt the thermostat housing back to the engine and replace the hose. Fill the radiator and start the engine. Allow the engine to run for awhile then carefully check the raditor level. Add antifreeze-watrer mix.

There are 2 bolts only so seems like an easy fix. but it is tricky as the throtle body and exhuast are in the way, very tough to get the back bottom bolt, but can be acsessed with a wably and long extention under the exhaust( difficult)or a long13mm open end from the back(slow)1/4 turn at a time, seems hard but the easyest way is to take the three bolts off the throtle body and the hole assembly will come off with the removal of three vacume lines and three wires, the hole thing comes off out of the way makes it very easy to reach the thermostat seems like a pain but will save you two or three hours in the long run less chance of stripping or braking the bolt then you will have bigger problems then just a thermostat. been there didn't like it.

It's a bit tricky actually. I bought a Haynes manual, and the diagram within does not display this particular motor and so is pretty useless. The thermostat housing is located on the end of the top water hose mounted sideways on the top of the engine underneath the throttle body and right next to the junction of the exhast manifold and header. You will have to remove the air cleaner box for sure, but access is extremely restricted compared to the 3.1l.

THERMOSTAT REMOVAL

HINT: Removal of the thermostat would have an adverse

effect causing a lowering of cooling efficiency. Do not remove

the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat.

1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT

2. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP WITH AIR CLEANER

HOSE

3. DISCONNECT ECT SW1TCH CONNECTORS

4. DISCONNECT ENGINE VIRE PROTECTOR FROM

WATER INLET AND RH CYLINDER HEAD

Remove the 2 nuts, and disconnect the engine wire

protector from the water inlet and cylinder head.

5. DISCONNECT WATER INLET PIPE FROM WATER

INLET AND LH CYLINDER HEAD

a) Remove the bolt and disconnect the inlet pipe from the

water inlet.

b) Remove the O-ring from the inlet pip e.

6. REMOVE WATER INLET AND THERMOSTAT

a) Remove the 3 nuts, water inlet and thermostat.

b) Remove the gasket from the thermostat.

INSPECTION

INSPECT THERMOSTAT

HINT: The thermostat is numbered with the valve opening

temperature.

a) immerse the thermostat in water and gradually heat the

water.

b) Check the valve opening temperature.

Valve opening temperature: 80 - 84CC (176- 183 deg f)

If the valve opening temperature is not as specified,

replace the thermostat.

c) Check the valve lift.

Valve lift: 10.0 mm (0.394 inch) or more at 95CC (203 deg f)

If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the

thermostatleedavidian_93.jpgleedavidian_92.jpg.

d) Check that the valve is fully closed when the

thermostat is at low temperatures (below 40CC (104CF)).

if not dosed, replace the thermostat.

INSTALLATION

1. PLACE THERMOSTAT IN WATER PUMP

a) Install a new gasket on to the thermostat.

b) Align the thermostat jiggle valve with the upper stud

bolt and insert the thermostat in the water inlet

housing.

HINT: The jiggle valve maybe set within 15 deg of either

side of the prescribed position.

2. INSTALL WATER INLET

Install the water inlet with the 3 nuts.

Torque: 8.0 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.)

3. INSTALL WATER INLET PIPE

a) Install a new O-ring to the water inlet pipe.

1993 toyota camry change thermostat

You're going to lose some coolant, so have a bucket or other container ready. Follow the upper radiator hose to the point where it's connected to the engine. The hose is clamped to a metal housing which is bolted to the engine. Remove the bolts (not the hose) and lift the housing to expose the thermostat (may require a little prying with a screwdriver or similar tool). Note how the old thermostat is fitted (which end is up), lift it out of the engine, and then remove all traces of gasket from the housing and the engine. Install the new thermostat and gasket, replace the bolts, add coolant as necessary, and you're done.
