Where is the fuel filter located and how do you replace?
You need to first jack the car off the ground, the fuel filter is located in front of the fuel tank. A new fuel filter is inexpensive and easy to find. One end of the filter needs to be disconnected with a wrench, around 5/8". The other end is a very simple, somewhat fragile plastic clip that should be no problem to disconnect once you look at it for a minute or so. Make sure and keep lots of rags handy, because once you unhook the filter, it will leak all over the place. Once you have the old one out, installing the new one will be simple.

Just a little addition to Eitan's posting. I would very highly recommend you relive the fuel pressure before disconnecting the fuel line at the filter. If you do not relieve the pressure ( which is at appx. 50 to 60 lbs. ) you will be sprayed with quite a bit of gasoline. Please be safety conscious, NO electric drop lights under the car with you, and of course NO one smoking in the near vicinity. It is also a good idea to do the job when the car is cold, so no gasoline can get on hot exhaust pipes. Relieving the fuel pressure first will make it easier and MUCH safer. The fuel pressure relief vave is in the engine compartment where the fuel line enters the fuel injections system. Just locate a small container and some rags or paper towels and open the valve slowly and capture the fuel with the container. To install the new filter simply push it in at the rear connector untill it snaps and locks in then tighten the front connector with a 16MM wrench. Jerry

Car sputters and loses power
The new fuel filter was installed but it leaks at the intake. It has an o ring in it. Someone else removed it and replaced it so I did not get to see it before it was removed. The person did not come back to finish the job. It seems like it should be very simple unplug and plug job but it leaks and I even bought another fuel filter but have the same problem. Any help is really appreciated.
2003 Olds Alero 6 cylinder. I may have the same problem minus the leak. My car stalled a few times and thinking it may be an injector or even watered down gas, of course due to the gas supply issues, so I treated it as so at first. And with supreme gas and some additive it was ok a couple days. Then I went out one am and it would not start. Try after try after try. Im no master mechanic but have enough curiosity and basic knowledge that Im now guessing its the fuel Whoa! Prohibitive all the way round. So I was going to let it set until the cash was available. Then a friend came by and in discussion he mentioned the filter, and cheaper and possibly more likely the issue. Filters are made to replace and to spite what many think, auto makers try to make in tank pumps that will last a very long time, well at least I have faith they do, LOL. So ok now I have bought the filter and shall change it today, and thanks to the previous note I am more comfortable that I can do this without a hitch. I will write again with the results. rottyman2005 Ocala, Fla.
