If all the bolts are removed the cover is stuck on by gasket sealer, u must use a gasket scraper or a really good putty knife and go around the cover and tap the putty knife between the cover and housing until it comes off, they can really get stuck, almost like they are welded.

hi it is very simple, just remove all the bolts around the edge of the housing, make sure you empty oil first, then just leaver it off with a flat screw driver or small leaver bar, it might be hard to do so a soft mallet or soft lump hammer will be needed..and that's it, no special tools required

Suggest to remove cover and replace gasket with Permatex Gasket Maker Silicone. Fully clean and dry apply a 1/4 bead on cover and bolt down to 20 ft lbs. go around several times to compress silicone. Let silicone cure 30 minutes then refill.

Jeep cherokee rear differential

First replace the seal and case cover gasket, then top up diff oil, test to see if noisy is eliminated , because since the oil is leaking it might be running dry.

Need to replace the seal at the differential

There are several seals for the differential. The pinion seal is towards the driveshaft. The rear cover is on the back of the differential.

The rear cover seal is a gasket and can be replaced by removing the rear cover and scraping off the old gasket. Some mechanics make their own gasket out of a liberal application of atv gasket compound. Other mechanics use a stamped gasket and may apply a small amount of cement to one side of the gasket to hold it to the cover.

The cover is bolted on by Torx head fittings.

The pinion seal is another matter. The driveshaft needs to come off. The flange needs to come away from the differential and the seal rides the shaft going into the differential. Some housings require a removal tool.

With either seal, you need to determine the type of differential you have. Limited -slip requires an additive to work in the standard lube. Some require only synthetic gear lube as well as the additive.

A cover gasket is not very hard to replace. The pinion seal can be more difficult. Price the repair.

Do not reuse the differential fluid.

How do I determine if I need the 7.5 or 8.8 size rear wheel bearings for my 1988 Ranger custom 2.9L Ford 2 WD?

The rear cover gasket is different for the two differentials.
Both are 10 bolt but a slightly different shape.
You should be able to look at the two gaskets and tell which one fits your cover and then know which size ring gear you have.
You can look in the parts store or online.

Differential gasket

Rear cover gasket is easy. Unbolt, drain, clean and replace gasket; fill with proper gear oil. Pinion seal on the front of the differential, different matter. If its the pinion seal leaking, take it to a shop with experienced techs.

How do remove the rear differential cover on a 2003 Ford Explorer? The gasket is leaking and I want to replace it. The cover is bolted to the frame member and that's alittle

The cover gasket is silicone and is not designed to be serviced without removing the differential assembly. You will need to remove axles , driveshaft , and maybe the spare tire to get differential out.

Loosen the lower bolts on the cover to drain the differential, remove all bolts, remove cover and clean cover, replace gasket or silicon, replace cover and tighten bolts to spec or snug + 1/4 turnrefill with proper fluid.
