Question about Dodge Pickup

Hi Guys I have a good one for you. I have a 78 dodge D300 1ton truck it has a rebuilt engine 440and a rebuilt transmission in it less than 1000 miles on them the other day it started to make a knocking noise when starting to pull away from a stop or under torque. I have ck to see if there was any play in the crankshaft back and forth movement there is not that much movement at all less than .015. Driveline was new at 2000 miles ago

Was the knock on top or bottom of the engine? Was there any performance upgrades when it was rebuilt?

  • Zaraki Sep 13, 2010

Check to be sure that all of the torque converter bolts are tight.

  • truekraut Sep 13, 2010

Just finished cking that a few minutes ago thanks

  • truekraut Sep 13, 2010

no performance upgrades when rebuilt. The only upgrade was in tranny and that was a shift kit
and the knocking is coming from the tranny area as I can tell can hear more from the floor board area. Did have the hood open and was moving to hear the noise and it was comming from the tranny area past the flex plate area

  • Zaraki Sep 13, 2010

That is not a good sign, and I would tend to go with the #1 solution below and if the vehicle is still under warranty then it should be taken back to them as soon as possible before any warranty does expire. That knocking could be in the transmission or the torque converter, and I have heard knocking sounds from faulty torque converters, cracked flex-plates, and cracked drive gears in the front pump of the transmission can also cause a knocking sound, or the band inside of the transmission could have come loose and is knocking against the side of the transmission case. A fine brass cloud in either the transmission fluid or the engine oil would indicate which one has a problem.

One possible solution is that you got a bad rebuild. The measurement you took is generrally controlled by shims or cap or the front and rear main bearings. So it couls be that anyone or more of the other mains was installed improperly. Now that you have soem mileage on it, it is wearing down and latting the piston hit the cylinder.

This was supposed to be a clarification request like the one above and it was not meant as an answer to your problem, However, I am through trying to help you out now.

  • truekraut Sep 29, 2010

Wellguys its was the tranny yoke that caused the problem it cracked where it is splined and when you started to move it slipped

  • Zaraki Sep 29, 2010

That is actually why I suggested that you take the vehicle back to the repair facility before any warranty expired, because like I was trying to explain above there are too many things that could have been making that noise. We can only give you a diagnosis based on the information that you have provided, and there was certainly not enough information provided to make a proper diagnosis in this case, and there should also have been some kind of a feeling associated with that Knocking noise when you pulled away under torque that you did not disclose, and again that is why I suggested taking the vehicle back to the place of repair, and that is also why I never actaually gave a solution to this problem, I was only responding through clarification requests and this was not meant as any kind of a solution or to be rated and if it was it would not even deserve the rating that you did give it, and this is not the first time that I sent a clarification request that wound up as a solution and I hope that problem gets worked out soon. I am very happy that your vehicle is repaired and that is all that really matters anyway.

Did they put the right plug in the trans? When you put shift kits in they remove a pressure sensor of some sort and replace it with a plug. If the plug isnt the right size there is a pin in the tranny that moves out and in. It might be hitting the plug. If thats not the problem check the flex plate thoroughly for any cracks. Let me know

Is a 2009 dodge truck 1500 transmission compatible with a 2009 2500 dodge truck 5.7 litre hemi.

I would have to doubt it. Even if the transmission models were the same, the gear ratios would be different to accommodate the towing capacity difference between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton. Usually 1/2 transmissions are built with smaller/ fewer clutch discs because they are designed to move less weight. Also, the computer will not just recognize a different transmission, and you will have to reprogram it to match, with all issues to overcome, it will be cheaper and easier to get the bad one rebuilt.

Probably the bands and internal clutches for your particular transmission are shot. If you took off the transmission oil pan and looked at the filter you would find pieces of metal in the filter. Some transmissions also have a magnet to pick up some of the disintegrating metal as well. My recommendation is to take it to your trusted auto mechanic and have him find you a good used one or a rebuilt one. If you go to a dealer you will pay thousands. It will still cost over a thousand parts and labor but that's a hell of a lot less than the alternative. Also it would cost you more to have the transmission rebuilt than to get a good, low Milage used one or a rebuilt one from a place that rebuilds them all day. I have been down this road with both engines and transmissions and my info comes from a mechanic with over 50 years of experience that owns his own shop. Good luck. Cost about $1500 or less my way.

hopefully your gears inside the tranny aren't eaten up. It has to be dropped and inspected. You may have to get a rebuilt one unless you get that one rebuilt. Either way it's gonna cost you. I would go to where taxi's are fixed they may be more reason

1998 dodge ram 4x4 transmission problems

You will need to get the transmission rebuilt. With the info that you have provided the direct clutches are welded together. Becareful about getting it rebuilt, most shops see Dodge transmissions and they see dollar signs. You should be able to get it rebuilt for around $800.00 to $1000.00 depending on amount of damaged hard parts. Thanks and good luck with your repair.
