Question about 2005 Lincoln Aviator
I had the same problem in my 04 aviator it most probably is a solenoid that needs to be replaced. they are not that expensive and the dealer should be the one doing it. if you replace it soon enough your transmission should be fine

I have the same problem with my 2004 Aviator. I can tell you this is the precise reason I am currently passing a collection plate around to pay for a new transmission. $3500 for a truck with only 36K miles, and I have only had it since April 2008.
My first quote was $4100 and then $3500 by the Lincoln dealer.
Better luck for you.

Take it to another dealer if the guy is blowing you off. If you don't want to do that, then there is a number in your owner's manual towards the back. It is a 1-800 number that will connect you to customer service in Dearborn. Explain the details to the representative, then the rep will get in touch with the dealer and have a little discussion with him. You may find that his attitude will change. I assume that the car is still under warrany? I believe they came with a 4yr/48K mile warranty? You might need to have the fluid changed. Or there could be another problem. But discuss it with the people in Detroit and they will help you. good luck.
