Question about 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2 Answers

I have a 2003 Chevrolet 1500 HD+ 4x4 6.0 gas motor. The oil pressure gauge either reads 80psi or 0 psi. I do not here any noises coming from the motor when it is 0psi. Could this be the oil sending unit and if so where is it located. Thank you rwh1968@msn.com

It's most likely failing stepper motors on the instrument cluster's circuit board, pretty common problem on 03-06 Silverado models. Check this page for more info on how to get it fixed - Silverado oil gauge fix

How do I check and replace engine oil sensor.

Knowing how these gauges work , I'd say you have an instrument cluster problem not oil sender unit. 2003 - 2006 GM had bad stepper motors in the instrument cluster . If there was a problem with the oil sender the gauge would default to zero .
Engine Oil Pressure Gage
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the engine oil pressure as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM). The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the engine oil pressure. The engine oil pressure gage defaults to 0 kPa (0 psi) or below if:
?€¢
The PCM detects a malfunction in the engine oil pressure sensor circuit.

?€¢
The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.

If you don't know what class 2 serial data communications are ,google it. How to repair GM Instrument Cluster Speedometer Gauge Stepper

Oil pressure gauge does not reach 40 PSI. Heard the sounds like a loud ticking coming from the engine on the passengers side. Then pressed on the gas peddle and it didn't want to add power. Ticking n

Not sure if there is a question here or not. If the pressure is always below 40 and you are hearing engine noise, chances are the oil pressure really is low. You could replace the sending unit or use a mechanical gauge to verify.

2003 1500 silverado 5.3l engine oil pressure gauge reads high and wil not reset to 0lbs. when engine is shut off. i have replaced the oil sending unit

The 2003 gm vehicles have a common problem within the instrument cluster panel. Each gage has a "stepper motor" soldered to the back side of the circuit board; and a very small shaft protroding through the circuit board with a needle for the gage attached . The stepper motors are about the size of a quarter in diameter with four terminals. They are small gearmotors. They do not have a spring return; so when they fail their needles do not return to home (0 psi for example or 0 miles/hour). You can find reputable repair shops online. One I know of in Minnesota is www.speedometerrepairguy.com. I bought the parts from him (on ebay) and soldered them myself but beware you need advanced soldering skills here not to mention a very good magnifying glass to inspect the solder joints. I hope this helps.
In my case the speedometer was hanging up in cold weather.
Replacing the stepper motors cured my troubles.

Oil pressure gauge is reading 80 ..could a wire had come loose? If so , where could I find the wire??

Unplug the oil sending unit. If you had posted a year make model and engine size I could have told you where to look Generally they are near the oil filter unless it is a truck.

If the gauge reads zero with it unplugged replace the sending unit. If the gauge still reads 80 psi you will need to read data with a scan tool. If data says 80psi you have a wiring issue. If data says 0 than you have a bad gauge.

More often than not it is the sending unit.

The oil sending unit is located on the engine block behind the drivers cylinder head area. You have to climb up on the motor to see it cause it is hard to see behind the wiring harness. You may also want to purchase a new sending unit because it is very long and you might need to buy the sending unit socket to replace it.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Oil pressure gauge reads 80 psi with engine off and pegs running

That is probably a defective oil pressure gauge or a broken oil pressure sender, it reads 80 psi just because that is the maximum value allowed.

Pressure can be verified by reading it with a gauge tool.
If you really have pressure over 70 psi when engine is running then start replacing the oil filter, and check that the oil lines from pump are not obstructed, if there is nothing in there then replace oil pump.

If instead the gauge reads 80 with engine off, that is a defective pressure gauge.

OIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON AND PRESSURE GOES TO 0 ON GAUGE

Any time the oil pressure is 0 you take a chance of locking up the motor. The only way to know for sure is to put a pressure gauge in the oil pressure sending unit port on the engine and see what the pressure really is. At that point you will either have the peace of mind in the knowledge that the sending unit is really bad and needs replacement or you can then contact a repair shop and tell them what your testing has revealed. I wouldn't drive or run your truck while the oil pressure is at zero.

Good luck
