Problems with Chevrolet Cobalt

I have a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt (automatic) and it seems to be having a lot of problems and the local car dealer ship doesn't know what to fix becuase they can't duplicate them. When I drive down the road underneath my center console by the floor it makes rattling noise, my gear shifter stick trying to get it out of park, and more that I can't remember at the moment, what could be wrong with it, and also what problems have you had or heard about. Thanks

The only solution is to buy a new shifter from gm or to find one at a salvage yard..the shifter is junk, and gm knows it,what the problem is with the shifter is the small round plunger that it attaches to is broke and there is no fix for it,had that small round plunger that the shift pin is attached to would have been metal,no one would be having these problems out of the shifters, what breaks the plastic plunger is the locking mechanism, that is bolted to the side of the shifter, that releases the shifter when you hit the brake pedal, which would have been a great idea,if the plunger would have been more durable, anyway if someone tries to move the shifter while it's not started or when the ignition isn't on,then the lock is on,and that puts sideways pressure on the pin that goes up and down with the gear shifter that makes everything work.i have a girlfrien that this happened to and i took it all apart and figured it out,i have done mechanic work all my life.and GM should be ashamed of their self for allowing this to go on,they know exactly what's wrong with these shifters, and society is allowing them, mostly consumers like myself, that can't afford to purchase a new gear shifter to fix the problem, because that's what it takes, and from what i can understand is they haven't even fixed the problem,so you could buy that new gear shifter from the dealership,or anywhere else, and if someone grabs your gearshift and tries to put it in gear, without pushing the brake, bamb your out that big expense again, and you won't even know exactly when you broke it,because there's a spring in there with that plunger, that keeps the pin locked in one place, and it will hold it in there for awhile until it falls off, that pin is made on that plunger when they manafacture the gear shifter, and what happens is the hole in the plunger breaks into two halves, and that's what allows the pin to fall out,and with no pin in the shifter nothing works, not the micro swith that tells the ignition swith that the car is in park,so the key will come out,and the ratchet pawl can't work either, you can literaly put the car in any gear that you want while driving down the road, and destroy your transmission, and or could very,i repeat very easily cause an accident, and it's for this reason that it should be a recall, and GM knows it.shame on these dealerships that are telling consumers that they poured water down in their shifter, and that caused the problem.you could stand all day with a water hose, and spray it into this shifter, and it couldn't hurt a thing, not one thing, exceppt to flood the floor boards.so again shame on you GM,for not only recalling the shifters, but exspecially for not fixing the problem that you know is your fault, keep up the good work, that's why the foreign competitors have taken everything away from us.it's just ashame..

Cobalts with automatic transmissions(2005-2008)have shifter failures, and will be covered under warranty, though GM won't issue a recall. I went through this with my 05 LS.

see my solution under number 8. all these gear shifters should be under recall before someone gets hurt from one of these. warranty shouldn't have anything to do with it.if they would fix the problem with the new shifters that there designing it would be one thing, but there not. where just being taken advantage of from giant car dealerships, just so they can design a almost complete plastic shifter.shame on you GM...

Could be a bushing in the front suspension.  Mine wore out and made a knocking pinging rattle sound like it was either coming from the left front wheel, front bumper area or the steering wheel.  Turned out to be a bushing in the left front wheel.  My steering column also had a rattle but not sure what it was exactly, but made a similar problem and didn't always happen.

i have an 08 cobaltl lt and i am bringing it in to the dealer for the second time for fixing the bushings. it started making the same noise like the last time. replacing that 2 times in a year is uncool. my regular mechanic at firestone who i know well told me to expect it to happen again! this sucks what the hell!! i also had to have my rotors smoothed out twice because the steering wheel was shaking when i stopped at high speeds. so if i need brakes, i don't think i should have to pay for rotors. chevt dealer said (when i brought it in again for the rotor problem)said they could not smooth them out because they are getting too thin. this sucks. i likr the car, and it looks cool but this just sucks!! i have a warranty still but will be done by the middle of february.

I have a 2008 cobalt. At about 5000 miles i kept hearing a thumping sound when making turns. Took it to the dealer, went on a test ride with the mechanic, no noise! When coming back into the dealers lot, we went over a speed bump, the car made the noise and kept making the noise at every turn. On inspection, dealer replaced the steering shaft. No more noise...but the car only had 5000 m on it.

I have a 2006 Chevy cobalt and it wont take gas, it don't want to idle. It misses when you give it any gas or idling. I noticed that my check engine light started flashing. What can be the issue?

First step is to get the computer codes read. Your local auto parts dealer may read the codes for you at no cost. Once we have the codes, we can advise you further.

2006 cobalt will not crank I have replaced battery , starter checked all fuses and relays and ran security relearn procedure

Does it click or try to crank when you turn the key? If nothing happens it could be a faulty safety switch (clutch or park on an automatic) or the ECM (electronic control module)

2006 Cobalt LS Coupe Intermittent Starting Problem

sounds about right, probably is ignition switch, reason you don't get codes is because if power is'nt connecting to engine while problems occurs then ecm won't pick it up. you should have 2 ignition switches, (the lock cylinder and key switch, the other is the electrical, usually located under the dash, and commonly atttatched to the column close to the firewall, check connections first, it may just be a loose plug in connection

Probably the temp gauge itself. Most of the time it doesn't have a problem but sometimes they do go bad. Did the car ever overheat prior to changing the solenoid?

One Key works and other does not

Is one key slightly different? A lot of times, when the dealer gives you keys, you may get a service key. Sometimes the service keys don't work. If the keys are the exact same, then (maybe) if the Cobalt is like the Ford Focus, there is a microchip in the key that sends a signal to the computer. I actually had that problem a number of times. Hope thats helpful.
