Black smoke = the air fuel mixture is way too rich, you have a major malfunction in the injection system. The only thing you can do is to replace the sparkplugs and run an injector cleaner additive. Then , if the problem is still there, take the car to a repair shop to have it fully inspected and the faulty part identified and replaced.

Hi, My thoughts exactly ( fuel leak). Is this a deisel or gas engine?
In both cases be very careful with lights or cigarettes.
You can smell it when you get out of car in a garage or stall.
Good luck.

which model do you have? if its a C or an E then it sounds like your drive authorisation system has failed(DAS) basically the ignition switch. Got to be MB dealer or a specialised MB tech with the right computer. Not cheap either, sorry if its bad news

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere between your valve and your source. A common vac leak that occurs on the 220 is at the vac. rubber y located at the back of the intake manifold. Follow your vac. line from the egr to the switchover valve and from the switch over valve to the source. Which is probably the y connecter
