I recently purchased an old 1983 F250 4.9l for my son. I need to replace the front rotors and the calipers. How hard of a job will it be?

If you dont no how please let a pro do the job your sons life is more important then saving a few dollars. brakes are the most important part of the vehicle besides the steering wheel.But if you happen to have done the job before it shouldnt be to much involved.

Replacing pads and rotor


Front and back rotors are different. For front rotors, after you remove the wheel you need to remove the bolts holding the caliper to the mounting spindle. The bolt can be a standard 6 face head, a recessed hex, or even a torx or star head recessed bolt.

With bolts removed, the caliper can be worked away from the anti-rattle clips the caliper slides on. These clips are called "hardware" and should be replaced.

The caliper pistons need to be pressed back into position because the new pads are thicker than what you removed. The calipers should be tied and suspended and not allowed to hang by their brake lines while you work with the rotors. Use a "c" clamp and an old brake pad to press the pistons back in. Sometimes it is good to remove the cap on the Master cylinder to allow for brake fluid to travel back to the Master.

Either replace or turn the old rotors and then put the brake hardware in place. Lube the caliper slides. then as a unit position the pads into the caliper and hang the caliper over the rotor. The caliper will hang and pivot into place. Replace and tighten the mounting bolts.

The rear brakes are more of a problem due to a second set of Emergency brakes in rear assemblies. So you have 2 sets of rear brakes, the Emergencies requiring clearance to remove the rear rotors. Some car models require readjustment of the Emergency cables before reassembly.

In all, I would suggest that you be an observer for your first brake job. At least get a Video of the process at a number of autoparts stores. You can wind up with a car you can not drive or reassemble without help.

Step 1: Identify Front Disc Brake Components

Most front disc brake components include: brake rotor, brake pads, brake caliper, caliper mount and brake flex hose. Brake service usual occurs between 20,000 and 40,000 miles depending on driver habits, road conditions and brake pad/ rotor materials used.
Step 2: Remove Brake Caliper to Replace Pads

Locate primary caliper mounting bolts; apply wrench pressure counter-clockwise (When looking at the head of the bolt) to remove the bolts, upper and lower. Make sure the bolt threads are in good shape and replace if necessary.
Step 3: Remove Front Brake Caliper

After removing the primary caliper mounting bolts lift the brake caliper off of the rotor and then tie or secure to the side, being careful not to bend or kink the brake caliper flex hose. Thoroughly inspect brake caliper and brake hoses for leakage, cracks or chaffing and replace as needed. Next remove the brake pads (If not mounted in the caliper) and secondary caliper mounting bolts. Notice how great protective gloves work, most technicians use them on the job today.
Step 4: Remove Brake Pads

Once the brake pads have been removed, make sure if there is anti rattle hardware to transfer to the new brake pads. Some brake pad manufacturers will include the proper lube (Caliper slides) and anti-rattle hardware to ensure proper performance of their product.
Step 5: Remove Caliper Mount

Finish removing secondary caliper mount bolts and remove caliper mount. Note: clean and lube caliper slides and pad friction surfaces of all foreign material or build-up.
Step 6: Remove Brake Rotor

With the caliper mount out of the way you can now remove the brake rotor. Sometimes it can get stuck so you may need to tap it with a hammer or use penetrating oil to free it up. Some manufacturers use small screws to hold the rotor on as well. Clean and inspect wheel studs, replace if any are damaged. Also clean bearing hub rotor mount surface to ensure the proper mounting of the new brake rotor. Inspect the ABS sensor wheel for cracks or damage and replace as needed.
Step 7: Depressing the Brake Caliper

Resetting Brake Caliper
To install the new brake pads you must retract the brake caliper piston. Remove the master cylinder lid or open the brake caliper bleeder screw to allow excess brake fluid to be released if necessary. Install C clamp tool and gently tighten clamp until caliper piston is fully depressed. Note: use old brake pad to protect the caliper piston. Close the bleeders once the piston is retracted completely
Step 8: Installing New Brake Rotor

Install new brake rotor, the new rotor is manufactured with a protective film over the rotor to keep it from rusting, remove protective film with brake cleaner before installing; also after the brake job is complete you may experience a small amount of smoke from the rotor when first used. This is normal and will go away after the first couple of uses.
Step 9: Installing New Front Brake Pads

Reinstall the front brake caliper mount, and then install front brake pads. Make sure the pads are seated properly in the caliper mount; it must be a close fit to work properly..
Step 10: Reinstall Front Brake Caliper

Re-Install front Bake Caliper
Reinstall front brake caliper and reinstall caliper-mounting bolts, recheck all mounts and mounting bolts. Check the caliper slides to be sure there is no bind and that the caliper moves freely back and forth on the caliper slides. Bleed brake system per manufacturer's specifications to relieve any air trapped in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly, repeat until normal brake pedal operation resumes, this operation is forcing the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors.

How do you change the front brakes?


The front brakes should be Disc, if it is you will need to remove the Caliper bolts, the upper and lower, and the Caliper will pull away from the rotor, depress the cylinder and the old brake pads will just pop out, replace the pads and postion the Caliper back on the rotor and tighten the upper and lower bolts, it is a very simple job.

Replace front brakes


Hi, first you will need to decide what all you need to purchase to do the brake job right, in order to figure out what needs to be replaced take the tires off and look at the pads, if they have less than 3/8 of an inch left on them it is probably time to replace them, then look at the rotors to see if they are grooved or rust pitted. after you purchase the parts from your parts store you can take off the tires and remove the two caliper slide bolts to take the caliper off to replace the pads, if you need new rotors you will also need to remove the caliper brackets to get the rotors off the hub(which may require a few taps with a hammer to break them free). there are two more bolts that hold the brackets onto the spindles. when you remove the old pads pay attention to how they are sitting on the caliper i.e. the direction, where the wear indicators are. installation is basically the opposite of removal. but make sure that you lubricate both of the slide pins on the caliper and the points on the pads where they slide on the bracket. good luck

When first applying the brakes there is a shuttering in the front end. After this it goes away and the car stops fine.


you need new brake pads and rotors and possibly calipers, the rotors are most likely warped. or the pads are worn enough where the caliper piston extends to the limit and is not stable in the caliper and wobbles.

Remove front brake rotors on a 2001 vw beetle


There are two different types of calipers used on 01 Beetles.
The first which does not have a detachable caliper bracket is easiest and is as follows:
Remove front wheels
Unbolt calipers from integrated spindle/bracket with proper allen bit and lift calipers and pads and support them.
Remove set screw holding rotor to hub. You may need an impact screwdriver as these seize up with age.
Slide rotor off hub.

The second has a separate detachable bracket that wraps around the rotor.
Remove the front wheels
Remove two caliper bracket bolts holding bracket, caliper and pads onto rotor as a unit.
Some vehicles have a standard bolt in this position, some have a VW special star bolt, so inspect to see if you are equipped to remove these. If you have the star bolts and do not have the proper tool, you need to get it... attempting to use the wrong tool will not end well.
Use a philips screwdriver to remove the set screw holding the rotor to the hub. You may need an impact screwdriver as these screws seize up with age.
Slide rotor off the hub.

How difficult is it to cange the front rotors?


depending if you have the tools to do the job and pb blaster lock tite and white and dark grease for a beginer it has a rating of 7-8. if you work on cars and know what your doing, then its easy.. first thing is to remove the calapers then remove the calaper mounting bracket spray around the studs and bolts with pb blaster also around the hub and tap around the whole area around rotor dont hit the studs (with hammer) to break the rust buildup this should break rotor free then you may want to clean the rust off so that the rotors seat properly remove and clean new rotors with brake cleaner to get off the film off them (shipping rust retardent) and wipe. spray bolt holes to clear any rust left while removing old rotor and braket and dry. place a small ring of lock tite on bolts holding caliper brackets and let stand till harden or almost hard. replace new rotors install bracket/s and bolts (torq to ? 80foot lb) while replacing rotors replace brake pads, replacing just rotors will over heat new rotors in spots and warp rotors!!! make sure you pull the pins that retain the calipers to the bracket and add light coat of white grease to pins so calipers slides easy and evenly

Rear brake job


pull the two bolts holding the caliper on and pull the caliper off now get a C clamp and compress the piston all the way into the caliper now remove the two bolts in the caliper hanger and remove the hanger now the caliper should just pull off ( if corroted hit it with a hammer ) now just put every thing back to gether the way they came off...............WHEN DONE WITH THE BRAKE JOB MAKE SURE TO START THE TRUCK AND PUMP THE BRAKES UNTIL THE PEADLE IS HARD. YOUR PEADLE WILL GO RUTE TO THE FLOOR AT LEAST ONE TIME MAYBE MORE.

How do I change the rotors and brakes on my 1999 hyundai tiburon?


Steps to replace front brake rotors and pads:

Safley jack up vehicle.
support vehicle on safety stands
remove front wheels
Remove 2 bolts holding the caliper to the caliper support.
remove caliper
remove old brake pads
remove 2 bolts holding caliper support to the spindle
remove rotor, might need a good whack with a hammer to loosen rust bond, also might have a locking ring on one lug stud
sand any and all rust from wheel hub
apply a liberal coating of antisiezing compound.
replace rotor and one lug nut to hold rotor steady
replace caliper support
replace new brake pads making sure squeel sensors are on inside upper corner, also make sure to apply caliper grease to caliper slides and pad sliding surfaces push caliper piston back.
replace caliper
replace wheels and torque to specs
lower vehicle
pump pedal
road test listening for any noises.

PS. these are generic instructions that are very basic, performing a brake job is a very precise and careful job. remember this syetem is responcible for stoping your vehicle at 65mph. this is not a job to attemp if you do not have a good grasp of mechanical applications.
