This will sound silly but use a piece of hose a few feet long as a probe and hold one end to your ear. If you do this it will lead you right to the leaking part!!!

Vacuum leak

Symptoms of engine vacuum leak: The problems that arise from an engine vacuum leak can be more than annoying. Idle speed that is way too fast is one of the difficulties, and stalling is another. Confirmation of an engine vacuum leak can be a very loud hissing sound coming from the engine area.

My guess is you have a vacuum leak or EGR starting to plug, get your self a can of starter fluid and carefully spray around vacuum lines, intake, throttle body, injectors, etc listening for a change in engine sound.

Hard pedal, hissing sound whem pressed. no break or very little

sounds like a bad vacuum leak. get a can of WD40 with engine running spray on all your vacuum lines small black rubber lines only spray about 5 or 6 inches at a time any change in the sound of the engine you have a leak there. sounds like your is a big black line behind where you put brake fluid in. it goes from behind there over to the engine.

I have a 2001 Ford Focus p0 171 code check engine light is on

Hi there:
DTC P0171 - System to lean Bank 1

You might just have an air or a vacuum leak causing this code. This is pretty common. Be sure to check for vacuum leak such as hoses/lines leaking vacuum, intake manifold gaskets as well as the pcv hose behind the throttle body. I would check the PCV line from the passenger valve cover to the rear of the intake manifold. That line will collapse over time due to oil and age. It will create a vacuum leak. With the engine at idle, move the vacuum and PCV line and see if the idle changes and listen for a vacuum swushing sound. Both 02 sensors will not cause both of these codes.

Hope this helps.

The motor shakes when put in drive gear, and get worse when step on the breaks.

Sounds like there could be an engine vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum hoses on the engine to ensure that none are cracked, broken, or disconnected.

When i shut off my silverado, there is a whooshing sound or like a air pressure sound coming from behind the instrument cluster. also, the service engine soon light is on and may have something to do with...

That is a vacuum leak. Chevy uses engine vacuum to move HVAC doors and turn valves off / on. You will have to get your HVAC control panel out to see which hose goes where. Yes this can cause an engine ECU to code.

Brakes seem to "let up" when trying to come to a complete stop, does not do it when only slowing, like during highway driving

It sounds like you may have a vacuum leak. The brake booster stores enough vacuum to give you pedal assist when stopping. The supply is not unlimited. Sometimes there is a cannister to increase the reserve and the cannisters look like a coffee cans and rust through. Or the brake booster (big round thing) behind the master cylinder can leak. There is also a valve on the supply line which can leak.

To test these areas technicians use a gas like propane while the engine is running and use a hose to route the gas around the seams of the brake booster, supply valve, and backup cannister I mentioned.

When the gas is drawn into the engine, the rpm will increase and you will know there is a leak. The propane will not hurt the engine and some states check emmisions with propane as well.

You may want to do a vacuum test of the engine to see if it is putting out enough to give you good braking.

2003 Blazer - Oil coming from climate control vacuum connector

May sound silly but take a short length of hose and put one end to your ear and use the other end to probe for the leak. It will be substantially louder as you get nearer to it. As far as the oily stuff in the lines, I can't think of anywhere it could be coming from unless the master cylinder is leaking into the power booster and somehow getting into vacuum lines...but this should not happen because any fluid in there would be drawn into the engine, and, the master would be low??? Try to find the leak first and deal with the other thing may turn out to be a "nothing" item.
