Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue

2 Answers

1998 car will not turn over. I have tried leaving the key on for 10 to 15 minutes and then trying to start it but nothing. I've read in another post that if you hear the fuel pump then it is not a security problem and I do hear the pump when the key is in the "on" position. All the lights and electrical parts work so there is power from the battery. I'm stuck as I can't start the car to take it in and have it checked out so I need to do some on my own. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check to see if the headlights "dim" when you hit key. If so, starter is locked up.

Possibly you have a bad fusible link at/near starter. If radio works, this is NOT the problem.

How to disable the vats security system on my 2001 oldsmobile alero?

you cant disable it, its a pass key system not a vats system (vats reads a resistance value in the key). The ignition cylinder has a sensor in it that measures a rotating resistance (then translates into a voltage reading) that the bcm reads to let the car know to start. Usually you can try and start the car, then the security light will start flashing - leave the key in the on position for ten minutes until the security light goes out. Then turn the key off, wait, then try and restart - they usually relearn the code after the first 10 minute try. Sometimes it takes three 10 minute cycles.

There are two types of alarm that was put in for Dodge and Chrysler depending what type you have I will give you the easy defeat. But first The BCM (Body control moduel) goes crazy why dont you try this method first. Roll down the window. Put the key in the ignition .Disconnect the battery negative post and positive and put them together for 2 minutes, then reconnect the positive first then the neagative. Then turn the key to the ACC position but do not crank the engine. leave for two minutes. Make sure battery has a full charge. Use a digital multimeter across battery posts, everything off, what is the reading? The generic spec for a full charge is around 12.6 volts. Note the reading. Leave the leads touching the battery posts, have helper turn key to crank, how much does the reading drop? Usually it shouldn't drop below 9.6 volts or there about. If it drops to zero, try charging the battery. Check battery cables. Did you try jumper cables to see if it would crank?

Hello:Try this procedure: turn key on, turn to start, let key come back to on wait ten minutes, turn key off wait 10 seconds turn key back on wait 10 minutes. turn key off wait 10 seconds turn key back on wait 10 minutes turn key off wait 10 seconds NOW try and start. In addition you might try tapping on switch assembly while trying to start. There is not any way to disable passlock. You might try having the engine control system codes read

You may have a faulty ingition. Otherwise you have the very common GM anti-theft system. If you have a flashing anti-theft light with key in igniton, then this is what you should do:

Put key in ignition, turn to ON position (Do NOT Start)
Leave in on position for EXACTLY 10 Minutes
Then while watching the anti-theft light, as SOON as the light turns off after 10 minutes, START CAR IMMEDIATELY after light turns off.

This will reset the anti-theft

Check the wire harness to the starter solenoid, the wires could have a break in it or the solenoid could also be bad. The heat of the engine could be causing the solenoid to fail till it cools down. Try that first, good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.

Hi, if you have a set of spare keys for the car try them as the one you are using may be worn.
This can cause problems with the code reading process with the key to keyswitch.
Failing that there may be a loose wire behind the keyswitch.
