Question about 2003 Ford ZX2

Open Question

I have a 2003 ford escort and the gear shift is stuck in park. I replaced the shift interlock switch and the brake light switch but the brake lights still won't come on. All the other lights work though. I also recently replaced the battery. Please help me because i need to get back and forth to work!

SOURCE: Gear shift interlock

It's a brake booster switch, Ford cars are notorious for this problem. It's a switch on the brake pedal that detects when your brake pedal is pressed. It's cheap and easy to fix.

Car stuck in park took cap off near gear shift to release it but when you put it back in park same problem . brake light switch not working

the brake light switch needs to be repaired first before you can accurately diagnose the shift interlock system. the brake light switch sends power to the shift interlock solenoid for the gearshift to release from the park position.

If it only lights up the tail lights when its in RND21 but works correct in park then I believe your looking at a internal shorted brake shift interlock on the shifter back feeding and sending power back to the brake switch and turning the lights on. I would access the shifter assembly and depin the wire I am pointing to and reconnect the connector and see if the brake light issue stops. You will need to manually shift it out of park or temporarily attach this wire to get it out of park for the test.

Gear shift stuck in park

most cars have an interlock that wil not let you out of park unless you are on brake pedal but this system is electrical so check fuses and brake light switch and most have rel. sol. at gear shift lever. assuming batt is charged of course

I have a 1999 Ford Escort and this morning could not get the silly thing to shift out of park. The release button on the shifter will not push in to move the shifter into drive or any other gear

These cars have a shift interlock switch that prevents the car from being shifted out of park if you don't depress the brake. If your brake lights work, then the switch it good. It isn't uncommon that the interlock solenoid fails. The solenoid moves the lock release when you depress the brake. If you look on the side of the console you can see a notch cut out. You can put a screwdriver in there to push the interlock and shift it from park. Of course, you don't want to do this all the time so you either need to replace the interlock solenoid (last I checked they were about $150) or just defeat the solenoid with a zip tie. The only problem with the zip tie is that you don't have to depress the brake to shift it from park and it can be shifted from park even if the key is not in it. Your owners manual will have better detail and pictures of the interlock and where to put the screwdriver to manually shift it from park.

2001 ford escort stuck in park lever won't move starts normally

If it wont move into gear, the safety switch is malfunctioning. You can take the plug out of the hole on the upper right side of the console just to the right of the gear shift lever. put a philips screwdriver in the hole and press down. this will manually release the gear shifter mechanism.
