the whole front cover comes off, and all that complexity.

2002 suzuki xl-7 Head Removal: Do I need to take the front timing chain cover off in order to take the head off? I don't have a manual yet. Resources hard to get for this vehicle...

the timing chains have to come off , they hold the cams down in the head bearings , so yes id say u have to remove chain cover off to be able to remove the cams !!

(and yes I know theres a bolt on ends of cams )

the book is only 4 bucks to read
if car is USA car , its there.
posted over 300 times now.
which engine, 2L I-4 or the V6, what engine, the have sizes
and can be gas or diesel.
if you dont know what engine is there, why try to fix it?
my guess its a XL7 and not XL-7, they are different cars.
you'll see that here. just 4 lousy bucks to read.

here is the 2.5/2.7 as seen on USA cars.

the main belt is spring tensioned belt 1.
on the alt its here. belt 2
to adjust any belt like this. (has 2 belts)
is to loosen the alt 3 point mounts. 2 bottom of alt.
and this. 2.5L (early V6)
ah here are all 5 engines. on all vits. (not 3.6L)

the adjuster is here, just like all cars had for 50 years even with V belts.

next , question, ? what tension, answer,
fsm book 2004 page 0B-5
mid belt span press 22lbs. force
and set flex to...0.28 to .35" flex.
lock down bolt in jpg photo above.
in metric, 10Kg and 5mm flex/

that code is in the FSM buy an FSM
or log in to and see true meaning,

i believe this is unique to suzuki and only your car./engine and body.
3.6L v6 , the pregnant version of my 2.5L
change the water pump on this engine sux.. big time.

Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor "B"
Number of Trips to Set Code: 2
Trouble Code Conditions:
Difference between camshaft (bank 1 / exhaust side) position and crankshaft position is out of specified range.
Possible Causes:
  • CMP sensor
  • CKP sensor
  • Signal rotor
  • Timing chain
  • Timing chain tensioner
  • CMP actuator
  • ECM

loose chain? or the can be a dead (jammed) tensioner.
if crazy loose it can skip a sproket tooth, do you ignore chain noise?

Metric Wrenches and Sockets is all you will need. A Serpentine Belt Tool usually works easier (more torque) in moving the Tensioner.
