Question about 1986 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

1986 mercury cougar - drivers door latch - how to hook up the various rods. I needed to replace the latch but couldn't find one, so I took it out, pried the top up and beat the heck out of the upper tooth with a crowbar and hammer and it eventually freed the teeth and the latch works again. I put it back in the car, hooked up the inside and outside levers and they work. However, every rod had fallen off when I took it out of the car. Besides the long one to the inside handle, I need to know where the various sized and shaped rods go. I think I may have used the wrong rod for the outside handle, but it at least works for now. I need to know which rod is for the keylock and how the heck to hook it up, as I just can't get it. Thanks! Dave

Open the glove box; you'll see two buttons to the left, the lower one is for the gas tank. Get an owner's manual asap as it helps to have this. Best of luck. (here's my ride)

Door on a driver side does not work I put a new door handle now it doesn't work?

Can't tell from the vid but you did hook up the rod from the handle to the latch mechanism, correct? There should be 3 different rods hooked to the latch, one for the lock, one for the inside handle and one for the outside handle. make sure the one for the outside is hooked up at both ends. Then disconnect the one going to the handle and try actuating the latch by pushing/pulling the rod. If you can't actuate it that way, the latch may be broken internally and will need to be replaced.

I need information on how to replace (or service) the door latch mechanism on my merc. I have realigned the door (and realigned the striker rod) and it will still not close. The latching system does not...

Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Remove front door trim panel (23942) and watershield from front door (20124).
  1. Mark the location of the bolt retaining front door glass run front retainer (21572). Remove the bolt.
  1. Check all rod connections against the appropriate illustration. Correct any disconnected or loose connections and check operation before replacing parts.
  1. Remove power door lock actuator (218A42).
  1. Disconnect the rods from the front door latch (21812). The front door latch remote control link (21940) and the latch-to-lock cylinder rod cannot be removed at this time because of the rod's end configuration. Remove wiring from clip on front door latch shield.
  1. Remove front door latch control cylinder rod (22134) from the door lock cylinder (21985).
  1. Remove front door latch remote control and link (21818).
  1. Remove the front door latch retaining screws. Disconnect the door open warning lamp switch (14018) if so equipped. Remove the front door latch from the front door.
  1. NOTE: Do not damage anti-theft shield.
Remove anti-theft shield from the front door latch.
  1. Remove front door latch remote control link, front door latch control cylinder rods and door open warning lamp switches from front door latch where applicable.
Installation
  1. Follow removal procedure in reverse order.
  1. Tighten front door latch retaining screws 4-8 Nm (36-70 lb-in).

92 Accord. Driver door not opening. Lock works. Took inside cover off. Rods going in to the Lock don't seem to be grabing any thing to open the door?

It sounds as though one of the rods (the one leading from the inside door handle to the latch, called the release rod. The other is called the lock rod) has slipped out of the latch at the door closure. Since you have removed the door liner (and the plastic skin, I assume) you should be able (with your window all the way down) to see what the situation is through the access hole near the lock/latch portion of the door. If the rod that hooks into the inner door handle doesn't feel as though it is connected to anything (when you pull it toward the front of the car) then the other end of that rod (the latch connection) has either broken or simply slipped out of the hole that it goes through (and may have fallen down some). There is normally a plastic rod retainer or something of that sort at both ends of that rod, to keep the rod in the holes it's supposed to go through. Sometimes they break of work loose. Take a careful look and you will probably be able to see if that is the problem. You say that the lock works. Does the outside door handle work? If so, that tends to indicate that there is nothing wrong with the latch itself.

1997 mercury cougar door stuck shut

Hi there I had a similar problem on a 98' ford explorer and replaced the door lock actuator and solved the problem in one shot. If you never worked in cars well it will be a little tricky but if you have little experience well then you have to remove the door panels carefully to avoid damaging any plastic hold screws, once removed try to aceess the door lock from the panel to get it open since it is easier to work. Now with the door open and window up then remove the mounting brackets of the window in order to get to the lock actuator. It is hold by two only one screw just remove the wire hook up and remove actuator. install new one and put everything back good luck..
