Have acold start problem eng has arough idle for 20 to 30 seconds entle secondary air injection system shuts down then eng smooths out and runs fine.

    took car to dealer 4 times , no codes found , cold start eng. has a rough idle 20-30 sec. then i here a spun bearing sound from the secondary air injection system , air control shutoff valve , when it shuts down, eng. smooths out and starts to run fine . dealer removed fuel rail cleaned injectors ,all so replaced timing chain tensioner, car still has problem the same problems .

    took car to dealer they worked on eng. for 3 days ran all the test possable scanned vehicle found misfire 20 to 30 sec. , heard noise from air pump and check valve ,then eng. smooths out and runs fine,they did replace the MAF sensor at my request which did not fix the problem, the dealer said the cold start problem is inharent to the vehicle and is normal ,GM would need to reprogram the ECM to repair the fuel control problem. what do you think? HELP! thank you.

Is the check engine light on? If it is, I would take it to Autozone and have that checked out for free. They will put it on their little hand held diagnostic computer and give you the codes that your car is having problems. More than likely it is the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I don't know how much you know about cars, but the MAF Sensor acts as a choke somewhat. I am sure that you will find that the MAF sensor is malfunctioning. Price for a MAF sensor is anywhere from $80-$300. But I am sure that it is the problem. I would start by getting the diagnostic code though. Another thing, no matter what sensor it is DISCONNECT the battery before removing and installing ANY sensor. The cars computer is VERY sensitive to shorting out while changing sensors.     Do you know where the Mass Air Flow Sensor is located? You might want to try to disconnect it. And see if this changes anything. This sounds like a problem that I ran into on a Mitsubishi Eclipse once. We took the MAF sensor out and it helped. He was not getting any codes, but it was the problem. It is for sure some place to start. And like I mentioned before, make sure that you disconnect the battery. If this doesn't help then add another comment and we will go from there!

Is the secondary air injection system nessary for good engine performance or is it's function only to dilute burn exhaust emissions?


It's only used on cold start to help the Catalytic converter light off . The check engine light will be on all the time if you disconnect it .

This occurs when the start-up engine coolant temperature (ECT) is between 5-50°C (41-122°F), and the intake air temperature (IAT) is between 5-60°C (41-140°F). I have a service engine soon light on and have hooked up an OBD11 reader to it and got code P0410 pertaining to a secondary air injection problem. hoses are fine, pump is new.


P0410 Oldsmobile - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

Possible causes: - Faulty Vacuum hoses damaged
- Faulty Air Pump inoperative
- Air bypass solenoid harness is open or shorted
- Air bypass solenoid circuit poor electrical connection
- Air bypass solenoid leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed
- Air diverter valve leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed

Tech notes: Visually inspect AIR pump and AIR bypass valve harness and connector, if connector are OK, then replaced AIR bypass valve.

When is the code detected? The secondary air injection system does not detect the presence of air in the exhaust when introduced by the secondary air injection system.

P0410 Oldsmobile Description An air pump is used on the vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start-up. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds the Air pump relay control circuit which energizes the Air pump. The PCM also grounds the Air combination valve vacuum control solenoid circuit, which energizes the Air vacuum control solenoid. Vacuum is then applied to both Air combination valve diaphragms which opens the shut off valves. The PCM enables both circuits simultaneously when Air system operations id desired. Exactly what the code entitles, the air injection valves that shoot air in the exhaust to help burn excess gasses when the engine warms up the engine when it's cold are malfunctionning. When the engine is cold is just started, it uses what we call a open loop, the engine runs fuel maps and such with a stored program in the ECU that doesnt take in account all the sensors to allow a smooth start and warmup, then after it's warm enough and all, it goes to closed loop using all sensors to lessen the pollution. So when in closed loop, the ECU uses the oxygen sensors to adjust air/fuel ratio, but seeing as how the air injection is possibly jammed open or malfunctionning in some other way and sending air in the exhaust, the sensor think the engine is running lean and injects extra fuel to compensate, but since the reading is false, the engine is actually running rich and making you lose power. Try bypassing the air injection if you want to test this, just find the hose in the exhaust manifold that goes to some black plastic canister type thing and unplug the hose from the canister and find a way to jam it shut so no air can get in. If you sealed it good you should now have full power when the engine has run a while. Hope this helps!

Secondary air systems typically utilize an electric air pump as well as one or two electrically controlled check valves to deliver air into the exhaust manifold.

The only vehicle which uses secondary air is the 2.3L PZEV Focus. The Focus uses a system with ported air. This means that airflow is delivered to each individual exhaust port. The secondary air pump is energized soon after start-up while the fuel system is in open loop and icing conditions are not likely. After the O2 sensors warm up, the secondary air pump continues to be energized while the fuel system goes into closed loop fuel. The secondary air system continues to run in closed loop fuel until the air pump is de-energized. The typical time period in which the AIR pump is energized is approximately 12 seconds.

The AIR pump flow check monitors the HO2S signal at idle to determine if secondary air is being delivered into the exhaust system. The air/fuel ratio is commanded open-loop rich, the AIR pump is turned on and the time required for the HO2S signal to go lean is monitored. If the HO2S signal does not go lean within the allowable time limit, a low/no flow malfunction is indicated. (P0411)

The electric air pump draws high current and must be energized through a separate relay. Both the primary and secondary circuits are checked for opens and shorts. First, the output driver within the PCM (primary circuit) is checked for circuit continuity (P0412). This circuit energizes the relay and the vacuum-operated check and control valve(s). Next, a feedback circuit from the secondary side of the relay to the PCM is used to check secondary circuit continuity (P2257, P2258).

That's s failure of the secondary air pump. It'll have to be changed. It's an emissions component meant to help with cold start emissions. It won't cause engine running trouble but at inspection time you'll fail for smog. Change it before then and you'll be fine.
