Don't replace it without testing, but the next most common item that causes that is the crank position sensor. on the drivers side of the bellhousing at about the 11 o'clock position looking from the rear.

Thank you! What are your suggestions for testing it?

Using a digital volt / ohmeter set on ohms, check for continuity between the b and c terminals (letters are on the connector)
You should show no connection whatever (same reading as when the meter is on and not connected to anything.) Any reading at all indicates failure. Test also after a shut-down as heat can give a different result, especially in partial failures.

Here is a really good thread on this issue. Mine is doing the same thing and I think it may be the ECM. Please post what and how fixed your problem.

I have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee limited 4.0 straight 6 and every once in a while it seems to want to stall and dose at times. i have replaced distrubter cap, rotor, coil, plugs, and wires and it still has...

answering for USA not export model.
great question and is now tuned up, scratch off top contender, yes.
stalls, are cause by 6 reasons in physics, or 50 parts, fails.
lets work the 6, mo easy.?
but ill pause now and do my 20 questions,(sorry, i cant see all)
I'll assume those spark HV wires are put on one by one and not scrambled. and gaped to spec? (under hood spec. sticker?)
Does the CEL glow just before the stall? or with scan tool attached
does it log (store) DTCs at stall or near?: use a scan tool and win.
they can be had for 10 bucks, (elm327)

  1. can you save the stall fast right foot actions?
  2. if yes, can you do it with tiny foot or huge (takes near wide open throttle to keep er' going"
  3. if stalled does it restart fast or take or take, wot FOOT ACTIONS. YES ;/NO OR WOT WORKS.?
  4. if it dont start, does the classic, spark test x6 pass muster?
  5. when it starts after stall, got black tail smoke, or stinks of raw fuel?
  6. lets now say all above passes, so why does it want to stall.?
  7. easy, IAC stuck closed, ! #1 cures that temporary.
  8. EGR if you have one, stuck open ,many dont these years.
  9. it stalls for lack of air, IAC or is flooding, what I do if i can make it stall on demand is let it and read the plug tips. oh my #6 is soaked, and #6 injector leaks. (evidence)
  10. Say its too random and hard to trace. easy. sure.
  11. what are all cause, easy, there is a list.
see the 6 ways here (it's really 5)
and the 18 line item failures. (lacking the symptoms alluded to above)

cheers !

My jeep will stall when I start it up then once it warms up it will go away. After the truck is driven a while the shaking and stalling continues. What can it be? I have replace the spark plugs 3 weeks...

You will need a multipoint check on the engine.
start with the fuel, fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel injectors and the fuel lines. Fuel problems are heat dependant and wil show up in cold or warm condition. check calibration of pump.
Now check the ignition circuit of the engine. start with the plugs- now being new- check the HT wires, the HT coils, the triggers to the coils- the ignition system.
Also check the fault condition of the ECU.

Stalls and backfires 1997 jeep grand cherokee limited replaced the map sensor, coil rotor. distributer, spark plugs, spark plugs wires. throttle body pressure sensor ,ingnition coil IAT sensor. amd still...

you need to check the fuel pressure, and did you mean you replaced the distributor or just the rotor because inside the distributor is a pickup plate that some times causes this also 02 sensor can cause your check engine light on if so go to chain auto parts store they usually read your codes for free.

My jeep grand cherokee is smoking really bad. Black smoke and it also skips. What might this be?

Black smoke is too much fuel. Bad spark plug, or plugs, bad spark plug wire or wires, bad injector, allow engine to cool, pull the spark plugs. does one look bad? Replace one or all. Plug wires don't last forever. An injector can stick open an pass too much gas :)

199 Jeep cherokee stalls without warning

Does it start right back up after it stalls? make sure all conections are tight at fuel pump, sounds like it could be loosing ground at pump, or hot lead is loosing its connection at pump. Also fuel pump relay could be getting hot and quits working.
