Question about Jaguar S-Type

Open Question

What causes a "brake assist fault" on a 2006 Jaguar S-Type? Brake pads were all changed, when the car was tested the brake pedal went slowly to the floor and the fault alarm came in. The back brakes were adjusted up using the emergency brake and there are no fluid leaks.

on the inside of wheel is a small bolt that bleeds the brake you my need a extra hand so some one can pump brakes, start from the back then the front, have person who is helping pump brakes a few times then tell to hold pedal down after confirm the pedal is down brake open the bleeder valve then close when fluid shoots out do this Intel feel brake pedal comes up a little after the one move to next bleeder valve. back to front.driverthen, passenger then move to the front and do same. this may help!!!

Seriously, brakes aren't something to play around with. If your car is having a braking problem, whether it's weak brakes, a mushy pedal, grinding sounds - whatever your brake problem is, you need to troubleshoot and repair it as soon as possible. We'll help you diagnose your braking problem so you know what repairs to make. Brake Pedal Goes Too Far Down to Stop. If you step on the brake pedal and it feels like it's going too far down before you start to slow, you might have the following problems:

  • Low Brake Fluid Level: Check your brake fluid. If it's low, top it off to the mark on the side of the reservoir.
  • Contaminated Brake Fluid: Even though your brakes operate in a closed system, contaminants can still work there way into the works. Air can enter the system through the smallest hole, and you can end up with water in the system from condensation and other means. There's not really any way to check for this, but bleeding your brakes will remove the bad stuff and replace it with new fluid.
  • Worn Brake Pads: Your brakes should never wear low enough to cause your brake pedal to feel low, they'll scream at you before then. But if they do get very low, you might have this problem. Replace your brake pads as soon as possible. Of course, this can be avoided with regular brake inspection.
  • Bad Brake Power Boost Unit Finally, if your brake booster goes bad you'll have low brake pedal issues. Most brake boosters are vacuum controlled, so a special vacuum measurement device that connects to the brake booster is needed to check it. If it's bad, you'll have to replace the boost unit.

sounds like you have a worn set of park break shoes. they are located inside /behind the read rotors. if you remove the rotor and the shoes look fine then you can adjust them with the little star gear located on the bottom of the brake shoes.

SOURCE: Brake pedal goes down to floor. Putting brake fluid doesn't solve problem. Vehicle must coast to a complete stop.

First look for obvious leaks under the vehicle, especially the inside area of each wheel... If you see fluid, you have either a blown cylinder seal or a bad line (check the rubber hoses to the front and back brakes too) Repair the offending part and bleed the air out of the system... (remember to clean pads or shoes if they have fluid on them)... If you see no hint of leakage anywhere, then suspect the master cylinder... if you remove the master cylinder, check and make sure that it didn't leak fluid into the brake booster diaphragm (Brake fluid will destroy the booster)... as in any repair when you open the system (lose fluid), you will need to bleed out the air to restore function... hope this helps...;-)

yes it sounds like the problem it could maybe be the brake booster if the brakes are better at a higher idle but there is a check valve on the brake booster that cost 2.00 too replace that runs off vacume i would replace first

which brake warning light is on? the xtype does not have pad wear sensors fitted. so i guess you mean the abs light or the handbrake light.more than likely its the abs light and the common problem is the reluctor rings on one or the other of the rear outer constant velocity joints corroded/ fell off get the fault codes out of the abs module to help.

bleed your brakes. new pads always take time to break in. Everytime I change a set they are never as good as the ones I replaced until after a little break in period. Do you have a high pedal or low pedal?

Bleeding air out of brake line after changing brake pads,we got no air bubbles but still have a spongy or soft brake peddle


Bleed the longest line first, then progressively shorter lines. Make sure you are using the correct technique in bleeding--be sure the master cylinder is always full, then pump the pedal several times in quick succession and hold pressure while your assistant opens the bleeder valve slowly and lets it drain until your foot is to the floor. Hold your foot until the bleeder is again closed, then repeat the process. Don't reuse the expelled fluid. Hope this helps!

How to change front brake pads on a 2000 jaguar s type? and if i pressed the piston in on a car with abs can that problem be fixed without buying a part? if not then what part will i need?


These are done just like any other disc brake system. Just slowly push the piston in and once the pads are installed, push the brake pedal half way down and do this until the pedal is hard again. Let me know if you need anything else.

Jaguar XJ40 1994. The brake warning light is activated when the brake pedal is depressed. I have consulted the manual which states that the brake fluid requires topping up or there is an electrical fault...


the master cylinder could be defective or the proportioning valve is stuck. You can try slamming the brake pedal down at a stop. this may reset the valve, if it goes off thats your problem. if it continues to stay on pull the E Brake or parking brake see if the pedal rises up f the pedal comes up it may mean your rear shoes are worn and the wheel cylinder or caliper seal is leaking. to test if all brakes are working go about 10 mph Be sure you e brake works then hit the brakes once you stop get out and look if there is rubber on the ground on all four wheels. do this in a area where it's safe and you can come to a atop before hitting someone Else's property or going over a cliff. If the front brakes work then your rear are not working if there is no marks on front that means there is a problem with the front brake system. remember the light is a warning jamming down the brakes may cause the master cylinder to fail so be sure your mechanicl emergency brake works good before doing test. otherwise you may experince the pucker factor, one guy at a shop I worked for pushed his tool box ouy yhr tindoor he didn't check the e-brake before doing the test in front of the shop. Opps.

Excessive wear on 1997 s type jags rear brakes


Unfortunatly this is normal, nothing can be done about it. Get pads checked every 15,000 miles to save discs.

How do you depress the brake caliper on 06 s type jaguar


C-clamp, and turn it in slowly to avoid damage to brake parts. Take lid of master cylinder is good idea prior, just to help a little.
