The center support bearing is secured to the cross-member using either a stud with an 11/16 in. nut or sometimes an 18mm nut. or it can also be sucured using a 3/8 in. bolt with a 5/8 in. bolt head and either a 15mm, 5/8", 11/16", or an 18mm nut, and GM did not stop the assembly line when they ran out of a certain nut or bolt and that is why there could be so many different ones used.

(A split drive-shaft is a balanced unit and it must be marked for proper alignment before separating the two halves or the drive shaft will no longer be in balance and will cause a vibration and early u-joint failure, and be very sure that there is a line on each half of the drive-shaft before it is separated so that the drive-shaft can be aligned re-assembled correctly)

The center support bearing should be pressed off and on the drive shaft using a hydraulic press, (a machine shop usually does not charge very much to do that) and using a hammer and a drift to replace the center support bearing is not recommended however some people do replace the center support bearing that way and a lot of the time they will damage the drive shaft or center support bearing and that will only make it more difficult and time consuming to properly install the center support bearing.

(The u-joint and the axle yoke should also be marked together before the u-joint is removed from the axle yoke so that they are installed back in the same way that they came out to prevent any drive shaft vibration)

To change the spark plug behind the steering shaft use a spark plug socket (a good spark plug socket will also have a provision for attaching a 5/8" or 16mm wrench to the end of the spark plug socket) and instead of putting an extension and a ratchet on the socket, slip the socket onto the spark plug and then use the wrench to loosen the spark plug and to tighten it, but also use a length of 3/8" fuel line and push the end of the spark plug into the fuel line and then use it to start and run down the spark plugs and also to remove the spark plugs once they have been loosened.

Hi Douglas, I'm glad to help. My first suggestion is to get to complete shaft. This way you want have any problems later on. It's not that much more expensive and you'll be glad you did. Below is the procedure for replacing them.



FRONT DRIVESHAFTS

REMOVAL
  1. Raise vehicle on jack stands or centered on a frame contact type hoist. Refer to Hoisting in the Lubrication And Maintenance section of this manual for the required lifting procedure to be used for this vehicle.
  2. Remove the cotter pin and nut lock Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut from the end of the stub axle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the wave washer Wave Washer from the end of the stub axle CAUTION: Wheel bearing damage will result if after loosening hub nut, vehicle is rolled on the ground or the weight of the vehicle is allowed to be supported by the tires.
  5. With the vehicle's brakes applied to keep hub from turning, loosen and remove the stub axle to hub nut.
  6. Remove the two front disc brake caliper to steering knuckle attaching bolts Front Disc Brake Caliper Attaching Bolts
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper from the steering knuckle. Caliper is removed by first rotating top of caliper away from steering knuckle and then removing bottom of caliper out from under machined abutment on steering knuckle Brake Caliper Mounting To Steering Knuckle
  8. Support disc brake caliper assembly by using a wire hook and suspending it from the strut assembly Correctly Supported Disc Brake Caliper Do not allow the brake caliper assembly to hang by the brake flex hose.
  9. Remove the brake rotor from the hub and bearing assembly Remove/Install Brake Rotor
  10. Remove nut attaching outer tie rod end to steering knuckle Removing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut Nut is to be removed from tie rod end using the following procedure, hold tie rod end stud with a 11/32 socket while loosening and removing nut with a wrench.
  11. Remove tie rod end from steering knuckle using Remover, Special Tool MB-991113 Tie Rod End Removal From Steering Knuckle Arm
  12. Remove the steering knuckle to ball joint stud, clamping nut and bolt Control Arm To Steering Knuckle Attachment from the steering knuckle.
  13. Using a pry bar, separate steering knuckle from ball joint stud Separating Ball Joint Stud From Steering Knuckle Note: Use caution when separating ball joint stud from steering knuckle, so ball joint seal does not get cut. NOTE: Care must be taken not to separate the inner C/V joint during this operation. Do not allow driveshaft to hang by inner C/V joint after removing outer C/V Joint from the hub/bearing assembly in steering knuckle, end of driveshaft must be supported.
  14. Pull steering knuckle assembly out and away from the outer C/V joint of the driveshaft assembly Steering Knuckle Separation From Driveshaft
  15. Support the outer end of the driveshaft assembly. Insert a pry bar between inner tripod joint and transaxle case Disengaging Inner Tripod Joint From Transaxle Pry against inner tripod joint, until tripod joint retaining snap ring is disengaged from transaxle side gear.
  16. Hold inner tripod joint and interconnecting shaft of driveshaft assembly. Remove inner tripod joint from transaxle, by pulling it straight out of transaxle side gear and transaxle oil seal Tripod Joint Removal from Transaxle When removing tripod joint, do not let spline or snap ring drag across sealing lip of the transaxle to tripod joint oil seal.
INSTALLATION
  1. Thoroughly clean spline and oil seal sealing surface, on tripod joint. Lightly lubricate oil seal sealing surface on tripod joint with fresh clean transmission lubricant.
  2. Holding driveshaft assembly by tripod joint and interconnecting shaft, install tripod joint into transaxle side gear as far as possible by hand Tripod Joint Removal from Transaxle
  3. Grasp inner tripod joint an interconnecting shaft. Forcefully push the tripod joint into side gear of transaxle, until snap ring is engaged with transaxle side gear. Test that snap ring is fully engaged with side gear by attempting to remove tripod joint from transaxle by hand. If snap ring is fully engaged with side gear, tripod joint will not be removable by hand.
  4. Clean all debris and moisture out of steering knuckle, in the area were outer C/V joint will be installed into steering knuckle.
  5. Ensure that front of outer C/V joint which fits against the face of the hub and bearing is free of debris and moisture before installing outer C/V joint into hub and bearing assembly Outer C/V Joint Inspection
  6. Slide drive shaft back into front hub and bearing assembly. Then install steering knuckle onto the stud of the ball joint assembly Steering Knuckle Separation From Driveshaft
  7. Install a new steering knuckle to ball joint clamping bolt and nut Control Arm To Steering Knuckle Attachment Tighten the clamping bolt and nut to a torque of 135 N·m (100 ft. lbs.)
  8. Install tie rod end into steering knuckle. Start attaching nut onto stud of tie rod end. While holding stud of tie rod end stationary using a 11/32 socket, Removing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut tighten tie rod end to steering knuckle attaching nut. Then using a crowfoot and 11/32 socket Torquing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut , tighten the tie rod end attaching nut to a torque of 54 N·m (40 ft. lbs.)
  9. Install braking disc on hub and bearing assembly Remove/Install Brake Rotor
  10. Install disc brake caliper assembly on steering knuckle. Caliper is installed by first sliding bottom of caliper under abutment on steering knuckle, and then rotating top of caliper against top abutment Brake Caliper Mounting To Steering Knuckle
  11. Install disc brake caliper assembly to steering knuckle attaching bolts Front Disc Brake Caliper Attaching Bolts Tighten the disc brake caliper assembly attaching bolts to a torque of 22 N·m (195 in. lbs.)
  12. Clean all foreign matter from the threads of the outer C/V joint stub axle. Install the washer and stub axle to hub/bearing assembly nut on stub axle and securely tighten nut.
  13. Install front wheel and tire assembly. Install and tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half the required specification. Then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 135 N·m (100 ft. lbs.)
  14. Lower vehicle.
  15. With the vehicle's brakes applied to keep hub from turning, tighten the hub nut to a torque of 244 N·m (180 ft. lbs.) Torquing Front Stub Axle To Hub Nut
  16. Install the spring wave washer on the end of the stub axle.
  17. Install the hub nut lock, and a new cotter pin Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut Wrap cotter pin prongs tightly around the hub nut lock as shown in Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut
  18. Check for correct fluid level in transaxle assembly. Refer to Group 21, Transaxle for the correct fluid level checking procedure for the type of transaxle being checked.
  19. Set front toe on vehicle to required specification.

Need to change front wheel bearing


Hub and Bearing Removal & Installation NOTE: The removal and installation of the wheel bearing and hub from the steering knuckle is only to be done with the steering knuckle removed from the vehicle
To Remove:
  1. Remove the steering knuckle and hub and bearing assembly.
  2. Remove a wheel lug stud from the hub flange using a C-clamp and Adapter Tool 4150A or equivalent.
  3. Rotate the hub to align the removed lug stud with the notch in the bearing retainer plate. Use a proper C-clamp and adapter tool to press out one of the lug studs 7922eg64.gif

    Rotate the hub in order to remove the lug stud 7922eg65.gif

  4. Rotate the hub so the stud hole is facing away from the brake caliper's lower rail on the steering knuckle.
  5. Install ½ of a Bearing Splitter Tool 1130 or equivalent between the hub and the bearing retainer plate. The threaded hole in this ½ is to be aligned with the caliper rail on the steering knuckle.
  6. Install the remaining pieces of the bearing splitter on the steering knuckle. Hand-tighten the nuts to hold the splitter in place on the knuckle. Proper installation of the bearing splitter 7922eg66.gif

  7. When the bearing splitter is installed, be sure the 3 bolts attaching the bearing retainer plate to the knuckle are contacting the bearing splitter. The bearing retainer plate should not support the knuckle or contact the splitter.
  8. Place the steering knuckle in a hydraulic press, supported by the bearing splitter. Properly support the steering knuckle for hub and bearing removal 7922eg67.gif

  9. Position a driver on the small end of the hub. Using the press, remove the hub from the wheel bearing. The outer bearing race will come out of the wheel bearing when the hub is pressed out of the bearing.
  10. Remove the bearing splitter tool from the knuckle.
  11. Place the knuckle in a press supported by the press block. The blocks must not obstruct the bore in the steering knuckle so the wheel bearing can be pressed out of the knuckle. Place a driver on the outer race of the wheel bearing, and then press the bearing out of the knuckle.
  12. Install the bearing splitter on the hub. The splitter is to be installed on the hub so it is between the flange of the hub and the bearing race on the hub. Place the hub, bearing race and splitter in a press. Use a driver to press the hub out of the bearing race.
To Install:
  1. Use clean, dry cloth to wipe and grease or dirt from the bore of the steering knuckle.
  2. Clean the rust preventative from the replacement wheel bearing using a clean, dry towel.
  3. Place the new wheel bearing into the bore of the steering knuckle. Be sure the bearing is placed squarely into the bore. Place the knuckle in a press with a receiver tool, C-4698-2 or equivalent supporting the steering knuckle. Place a driver tool on the outer race of the wheel bearing. Press the wheel bearing into the steering knuckle until it is fully bottomed in the bore of the steering knuckle. NOTE: Only the original or original equipment replacement bolts should be used to mounting the bearing retainer to the knuckle. If a bolt requires replacement when installing the bearing retainer plate, be sure to get the proper type of replacement.
  4. Install the bearing retainer plate on the steering knuckle. Install the 3 bearing retainer mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 21 ft-lbs (28 Nm).
  5. Install the removed wheel lug stud into the hub flange.
  6. Place the hub with the lug stud installed, in a press supported by Adapter Tool C-4698-1 or equivalent. Press the wheel lug stud into the hub flange until it is fully seated against the back side on the hub flange.
  7. Place the steering knuckle with the wheel bearing installed, in a press with special Receiver Tool MB-990799 or equivalent supporting the inner race of the wheel bearing. Place the hub in the wheel bearing, making sure it is square with the bearing. Press the hub into the wheel bearing until it is fully bottomed in the wheel bearing.
  8. Install the steering knuckle and the wheel.
  9. Check and/or adjust the front alignment.

The bolt is usually made is harder steel then the nut so you may get lucky and the only thing that will need to be replace is the Nut.
You can go and buy a Nut Splitter Tool or rent one from a Auto Parts store to remove your bad nut and replace it. Here is what the tool looks like and will most likely be the only thing you can use to removing the nut without damaging anything else.

How do I change the rotors on a 1996 F250 4wd truck?


CHANGING BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS
Changing the brake pads is pretty easy, after you remove the tire locate the two large bolts on the back side of the caliper i think they are 13/16 heads. remove these two bolts. after the bolts are out use a pry bar to work the caliper straight up off the rotor, slide the pads out of the caliper and compress the piston in the caliper, this can be done with a large c-clamp if you dont have a piston compressor (use the old brake pad as a buffer so you dont damage the piston).
4x2 remove the dust cap in the center of the hub use a pair of dikes to straighten and remove the cotter pin thats locks the castle nut in place then remove the castle nut (can be done with channellocks if you dont have large enough socket) slide the hub off the spindle careful not to drop the bearing and washer on the ground. *** put the lug nuts back on the studs up side down and flush them to the end of the stud if you still hve the stock open lug nuts if not then just be sure to hit the studs square so you dont damage the threads. place the hub on hard solid ground rotor side down and knock the studs out with a fairly good size hammer. reverse process to assemble
4x4 this is a little more difficult than 4x2 you will need some specialty tools (torqs, picks, snap ring pliers, and a 2 3/4 inch rounded hex socket) these instructions are for a stock ford automatic hub. remove the outer hub (three small torqs bolts). use a small to medium straight screwdriver to remove the first locking ring (inside lock) slide the inner hub assembly out of the hub. remove the outside snap ring from the axle shaft slide the three washers of of the shaft keeping them in order. there will be a small half circle keeper on the large nut remove this with a pick use the 2 3/4 socket to remove the hub nut slide the hub off the spindle careful not to drop the bearing and washer on the ground then follow the 4x2 instructions.

How to remove broken lug on 98 Elantra. Can't get the disc off that lugs press into. Already have removed 4 bolts/nuts that secure this disc to the brake rotor. Also have already removed large castle nut...


As far as I can determine, your Elantra has standard rear disc brakes.
The lugs should be attached to the hub, which is attached to the axle. The Disc or Rotor (they're one and the same) slip onto the hub. Oftentimes the disc will seize on the hub from rust. You need to spray the center hole, where the disc goes over the hub, with spray penetrating oil. Also spray the lug stud holes. Then take a (dead blow )hammer and hit the disc around its perimeter. It should then come loose.
The broken stud can then be taken out by hitting the front of the stud with a hammer. You may want to spray the back of the stud where it seats on the hub before taking the hammer to it. Place the new stud through the rear and make sure it's seated correctly.
Clean all parts with brake parts cleaner. The lug studs should not have any lubrication on them.
You have to re-set that "large castle nut" that was removed to its proper Preload Torque. I do not know that spec, but you need to find it out, and how it's done.
Suggest you purchase a Repair Manual for your vehicle(s). It really is the best tool you can get.

Bolts and nuts are off on wheel


It's somewhat involved. You have to remove the axel nut, remove the brake caliper and mount, and unbolt the wheel bearing housing flange, remove the wheel flange and wheel bearing. Next you must press out the the flange from the wheel bearing, and then you have access to press out the old bolts in the wheel flange. The new bolts must then be pressed back into the flange and then the flange back in the wheel bearing. I have seen some guys pound out the old bolt and then try to use the wheel nut to pull in the new one but the bolts never fully seat.

Hub and Bearing Assembly
ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Do not begin this removal procedure unless the following parts are available:
  • A new front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) (Step 1).
  • A new inboard halfshaft joint stub shaft circlip.
Once removed, these parts must not be reused during assembly. Their torque holding ability or retention capability is diminished during removal.

Removal
  1. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position and place the steering column in the unlock position.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Discard the front axle wheel hub retainer. It is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused. If loosened, the retainer must be removed and a new one installed.
    Remove and discard front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477).
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  1. NOTE: Make sure steering column is in the unlocked position, and do not use a hammer to separate tie rod end (3A130) from the front wheel knuckle (3K185) . Use extreme care not to damage boot seal.

    Remove cotter pin from tie rod end stud and remove slotted nut. Discard cotter pin and nut.
  1. Using Tie Rod End Remover 211-001 (TOOL-3290-D) or equivalent and Tie Rod End Remover Adapter 211-087 (T81P-3504-W), remove tie rod end from front wheel knuckle.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to remove the nut, or bearing and seal damage will result. Loosen the nut first, then remove nut from stud using the hex hold feature.
    For SHO vehicles, remove vinyl cover from upper link stud.
    Remove stabilizer bar link (5K484) from front shock absorber (18124) .
  1. Remove disc brake caliper (2B120) and support with wire to obtain working space. Do not allow disc brake caliper to separate from the front disc brake caliper anchor plate (2B292) to prevent contamination of the disc brake guide pin journals. Do not allow disc brake caliper to hang from front brake hose (2078) . Remove front disc brake rotor (1125) . Remove front disc brake rotor from wheel hub (1104) by pulling it off the lug bolt (1107). If front disc brake rotor is difficult to remove from front wheel knuckle , strike front disc brake rotor sharply between lug bolt with a rubber or plastic hammer.
    If front disc brake rotor will not pull off, apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor D7AZ-19A501-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A to inboard and outboard rotor/hub mating surfaces. Install 3-Jaw Puller 205-D027 (D80L-1013-A) or equivalent and remove front disc brake rotor by pulling on front disc brake rotor outside diameter and pushing on hub center. If excessive force is required for removal, check front disc brake rotor for lateral runout prior to installation. Refer to Section 06-00.
  1. Remove anti-lock brake sensor mounting bolt and front brake anti-lock sensor (2C204) .
  1. Remove and discard lower ball joint nut. Using Remover Adapter 211-211 (T96P-3010-A1), separate lower ball joint from front suspension lower arm (3078) .
  1. Using Rotunda Spring Compressor 014-00781 or equivalent, compress front coil spring (5310) until lower ball joint clears front suspension lower arm .
  1. Using Front Hub Remover/Replacer 204-069 (T81P-1104-C), Two Stud Adapter 205-237 (T86P-1104-A1), Metric Hub Remover Adapter 204-085 (T83P-1104-BH) and Front Hub Installer 204-067 (T81P-1104-A), press front wheel driveshaft joint (3B414) from wheel hub . Wire front wheel driveshaft joint to body to maintain a level position.

    NOTE: If bearing carrier is corroded to front wheel knuckle , apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor D7AZ-19A501-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A to the inboard and outboard wheel hub/knuckle mating surface and allow to soak.

    Remove wheel hub from front wheel knuckle .

Installation
  1. NOTE: If wheel hub is damaged or if any end play is detectable, replace wheel hub . End play is not adjustable. If wheel hub is disassembled, the assembly must be replaced.

    Remove all foreign material from knuckle bearing bore for correct seating of new wheel hub.
  1. Lightly lubricate mating surfaces of bearing corner and front wheel knuckle.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Knuckle bore must be clean enough to allow wheel hub to be completely seated by hand. Do not press or draw wheel hub into place.
    Position wheel hub in front wheel knuckle . Install three new hub and bearing retaining bolts. Tighten to 83-107 Nm (61-78 lb-ft).
  1. Push front wheel driveshaft joint into wheel hub . Hand start front wheel hub retainer.
  1. Slowly release Rotunda Spring Compressor 014-00781 or equivalent while guiding lower ball joint into front suspension lower arm .
  1. Install new lower ball joint nut. Tighten to 68-92 Nm (50-67 lb-ft).
  1. Install tie rod end into front wheel knuckle . Install new slotted nut and tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). If necessary advance nut to install a new cotter pin.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to tighten nut or bearing and seal damage will result. Install nut using hex hold feature to prevent the stud from rotating.
    Install stabilizer bar link to front shock absorber . Install stabilizer bar link nut. Tighten to 77-103 Nm (57-75 lb-ft). For SHO vehicles, install stud cover.
  1. NOTE: Remove rust from the rotor and hub mating surfaces with a medium abrasive pad.

    Install front disc brake rotor and disc brake caliper . Tighten caliper anchor bracket bolts to 88-118 Nm (65-87 lb-ft).
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: The front axle wheel hub retainer must be tightened to specification immediately during installation. If the retainer is not tightened immediately, the nylon lock will set incorrectly, leading to incorrect torque readings and bearing failure. Any front wheel hub retainer that is not immediately tightened to specification or is loosened must be removed and a new retainer installed.
    Install front axle wheel hub retainer . Tighten to 230-275 Nm (170-203 lb-ft).
  1. Install wheel and tire. Tighten lug nuts (1012) to 115-142 Nm (85-104 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Pump brake pedal prior to moving vehicle to position brake linings.

Removal & Installation
  1. Apply the brakes and hold in place.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Remove the cotter pin, lock nut and spring washer from the hub nut.
  5. While the brakes are applied, loosen and remove the hub nut on the end of the driveshaft.
  6. Release the brakes.
  7. Remove the front disc brake caliper and adapter as an assembly, and the brake rotor from the steering knuckle.
  8. Remove the nut attaching the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle. To do this, hold the tie rod end stud with a wrench while loosening and removing the nut with a standard wrench or crowfoot wrench.
  9. Remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using Remover, Special Tool MB991113.
  10. Remove the tie rod heat shield.
  11. Remove the nut and pinch bolt clamping the ball joint stud to the steering knuckle.

    CAUTION The strut assembly-to-steering knuckle attaching bolts are serrated and must not be turned during removal. Hold the bolts stationary in the steering knuckles while removing the nuts, then tap the bolts out using a pin punch.
  12. Remove the two bolts attaching the strut to the steering knuckle.

    NOTE Use caution when separating the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle, so the ball joint seal does not get cut.
  13. Separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle by prying down on lower control arm and up against the ball joint boss on the steering knuckle.

    NOTE Do not allow the driveshaft to hang by the inner C/V joint; it must be supported to keep the joint from separating during this operation.
  14. Pull the steering knuckle off the driveshaft outer C/V joint splines and remove the steering knuckle.

    NOTE The cartridge type front wheel bearing used on this vehicle is not transferable to the replacement steering knuckle. If the replacement steering knuckle does not come with a wheel bearing, a new bearing must be installed in the steering knuckle. Installation of the new wheel bearing and hub must be done before installing the steering knuckle on the vehicle.
  15. If the wheel bearing and hub need removal. Do not reuse the wheel bearing.

To install:
  1. Slide the hub of the steering knuckle onto the splines on the driveshaft C/V joint.
  2. Install the steering knuckle onto the ball joint stud aligning the bolt hole in the knuckle boss with the notch formed in the side of the ball joint stud.
  3. Install a new ball joint stud pinch bolt and nut. Tighten the nut to a torque of 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).

    CAUTION The strut assembly-to-steering knuckle attaching bolts are serrated and must not be turned during installation. Install the nuts while holding the bolts stationary in the steering knuckle.
  4. Position the lower end of the strut assembly in line with the upper end of the steering knuckle and align the mounting holes . Install the two attaching bolts. The bolts should be installed with so that the nuts face towards the front of the vehicle once installed. Install the nuts. Holding the bolts in place tighten the nuts to a torque of 40 ft. lbs. (53 Nm) plus an additional 90° turn after the specified torque is met.
  5. Place the tie rod heat shield on the steering knuckle arm so that the shield is positioned straight away from the steering gear and tie rod end once installed. Align the hole in the shield with the hole in the steering knuckle arm. Install the outer tie rod ball stud into the hole in the steering knuckle arm. Start the tie rod attaching nut onto the stud. Hold the tie rod end stud with a wrench while tightening the nut with a standard wrench or crowfoot wrench. To fully tighten the nut to specifications, use a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench to turn the nut, and a wrench on the stud.
  6. Tighten the nut to a torque of 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm). Install the brake rotor, disc brake caliper and adapter.
  7. Clean all foreign matter from the threads of the driveshaft outer C/V joint. Install the hub nut in the end of the driveshaft and snug it.
  8. Have a helper apply the brakes. With vehicle brakes applied to keep brake rotor and hub from turning, tighten the hub nut to a torque of 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm)
  9. Install the spring washer, lock nut and cotter pin on the hub nut. Wrap the cotter pin ends tightly around the lock nut.
  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Install the wheel mounting nuts and tighten them to a torque of 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Set the front toe on the vehicle to required specification.

Broken Lug Studs


You have to remove the hub to remove the bolts, if they won't come out by rotating the hub.

To remove the hub, take the cap off at the center of the hub (the cap would be poking you a the center of the hub, and is about 2 inches in diameter.

There should be a cotter key or something preventing the spindle nut from turning. Remove it. If there is a cover over the spindle nut, remove it. Take the spindle nut off. Pull lightly on the hub, and it will come off. Watch for the front bearing to pop out.

To reassemble, put hub back on spindle, put bearing and washer against bearing, thread on spindle nut and tighten while rotating hub. Back off 1/2 to 1 flat add cover (if used) and install cotter key.
