Question about 1996 Dodge Avenger

Thermostate installation installing new one. the new one pervents over heating engine is the seal supposed to fit the hole if so how?

I have never seen a model of this vehicle ,but normally the seal goes on top of the thermostat ,unless its like a VW where the seal has a slot in it which fits around the thermostat

It is recommended that you lift out the engine before attempting to replace the oil pan. Once the engine is lifted you can remove the bolts, remove the pan, clean all the old gasket material.
Installation: Remove the rear main bearing cap oil seal Remove the timing cover oil seal Clean all the mating surfaces and seal grooves Install new oil pan front cover seals Install a new rear main bearing cap oil seal Install new oil pan side gaskets on the block Make sure the tabs of the front and rear seal fit properly as these are critical spots Attach the oil pan to the engine block and install the retaining bolts

Proper installation of thermostate f 150 1995 302 I replaced 180degree thermostate w/ a160 degree. 1: was that ok? 2:Stupid me-forgot to notice how it was removed so I could re-install same...


The spring goes toward the engine. The spring is suppose to fit either in a recess in the Intake manifold or the thermostat can lock into the housing neck with a twist. The spring still is on the engine side, not the Radiator side.

Get your proper Thermostat. There are controls on your truck engine which work off of the Temperature. You will get poor mileage and your engine may not idle down with a colder thermostat.

Rear barring an seal replaced


I'm not sure if this is the right part of your car but, are you talking about the rear seal on the engine for the crankshaft?

If so:

If the crankshaft rear oil seal replacement is the only operation being performed, it can be done in the vehicle as detailed in the following procedure. If the oil seal is being replaced in conjunction with a rear main bearing replacement, the engine must be removed from the vehicle and installed on a work stand.
  1. Remove the starter.
  2. Remove the transmission from the vehicle, following the procedures in Section 7.
  3. On a manual shift transmission, remove the pressure plate and cover assembly and the clutch disc following the procedure in Section 7.
  4. Remove the flywheel attaching bolts and remove the flywheel and engine rear cover plate.
  5. Use an awl to punch two holes in the crankshaft rear oil seal. Punch the holes on opposite sides of the crankshaft and just above the bearing cap to cylinder block split line. Install a sheet metal screw in each hole. Use two large screwdrivers or small pry bars and pry against both screws at the same time to remove the crankshaft rear oil seal. It may be necessary to place small blocks of wood against the cylinder block to provide a fulcrum point for the pry bars. Use caution throughout this procedure to avoid scratching or otherwise damaging the crankshaft oil seal surface. To install:
  6. Clean the oil seal recess in the cylinder block and main bearing cap.
  7. Clean, inspect and polish the rear oil seal rubbing surface on the crankshaft. Coat a new oil seal and the crankshaft with a light film of engine oil. Start the seal in the recess with the seal lip facing forward and install it with a seal driver. Keep the tool, T82L-6701-A (4-cyl. engines) or T72C-6165 (6-cyl. engine) straight with the centerline of the crankshaft and install the seal until the tool contacts the cylinder block surface. Remove the tool and inspect the seal to be sure it was not damaged during installation.
  8. Install the engine rear cover plate. Position the flywheel on the crankshaft flange. Coat the threads of the flywheel attaching bolts with oil-resistant sealer and install the bolts. Tighten the bolts in sequence across from each other to the specifications listed in the torque chart in this section.
  9. On a manual shift transmission, install the clutch disc and the pressure plate assembly following the procedure in Section 7.
  10. Install the transmission, following the procedure in Section 7.

Location of thermostate on engine


You're going to lose some coolant, so have a bucket or other container ready. Follow the upper radiator hose to the point where it's connected to the engine. The hose is clamped to a metal housing which is bolted to the engine. Remove the bolts (not the hose) and lift the housing to expose the thermostat (may require a little prying with a screwdriver or similar tool). Note how the old thermostat is fitted (which end is up), lift it out of the engine, and then remove all traces of gasket from the housing and the engine. Install the new thermostat and gasket, replace the bolts, add coolant as necessary, and you're done.

Need location for the thermostate


Follow the upper radiator hose to where it attaches to the engine to find the fitting. Unplug the temperature sensor, disconnect the hose and remove the two bolts that secure the fitting to the engine. Pry the fitting off and you will have found the thermostat. Be sure to install the new thermostat in the same orientation and be sure to use a new gasket. I usually smear a thin coating of RPV silicon sealant (a little goes a long way) onto the gasket. Be careful to not over tighten the bolts and strip the threads.

Engine temp and heater temp not right.


Take it to another shop, The water pump doen't hold the Thermostate. The thermostate is in the thermostate housing where the end of the radiator hose is connected to the egine. 
There are different thermostate rating to which temprature you'll like your engine running at. Most common would be a 190 thermostate you can get them from 160 up to 220. 
As for the water pump you would know if that failed do to over heating or leaking from the weep holes in it. 
Bring the truck to another shop and have them flush and Antifreeze if it's never benn done and change the Thermostate to a 180 or 190 and should be done every Two years do to waer and tear. Note the 180 runs cooler then the 190 and so on. 
I run mine on 160 since I tow a trailer and the radiator also cools the transmisson oil too. Just for though but you should be fine at 180 or 190.

The best way to find the thermostat is to follow the lower radiator hose back to the engine where it ties into the thermostat housing.
You have to remove the accessory drive belt for the generator, then lift the vehicle to work from underneath, then remove the generator bolts and set it aside. Then remove the hoses from the housing. Then remove the housing and the thermostat.
Clean the sealing surface. Install thermostat with bleed hole at 12:00 oclock position. Install housing and tighten bolts to 105 inch-pounds (about 9 foot-pounds).

Follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator up to the thermostat cover. Remove the electrical connector that is on the cover (to the radiator fan switch) and then remove the 2 bolts holding the cover to get to the thermostat.
How to install thermostate:
CAUTION Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  1. Note the radio security code and station presets.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant into a sealable container.
  4. Remove the fasteners from the thermostat housing, then remove the thermostat.

  1. Install the thermostat using a new seal. If the thermostat has a small bleed hole, make sure the bleed hole is on the top.
  2. Apply an anti-seize compound to the threads of the fasteners.
  3. Reassemble in the reverse order of disassembly.
  4. Set the heater to the full hot position. Set the heater to the full hot position.
  5. On Odyssey models with 4-cylinder engines, locate the coolant bleed valve near the thermostat housing and open the valve 1/2 turn.
  6. Top off the cooling system and overflow reservoir with a 50/50 mixture of a recommended antifreeze and water solution, and bleed the system to remove any air pockets as necessary. Simultaneously squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses to help push any captured air pockets out of the system.
  7. Inspect all coolant hoses and fittings to make sure they are properly installed and if previously opened, close the bleed valve.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Install the radiator cap loosely and start the engine. Allow the engine to run until the cooling fan has cycled two times, then turn the engine OFF and top off the cooling system as necessary.
  10. Install the radiator cap and inspect for leaks.
  11. Enter the radio security code.
WARNING The manufacturer does not recommend using a coolant concentration of greater than 60% antifreeze. When mixing a 50/50 solution of antifreeze and water, using distilled water may help to keep the cooling system from building up mineral deposits and internal blockage.

make sure engine is cool then drain coolant by opening the drain plug at bottom of radiator. remove cap from radiator so coolant will continue to drain and when coolant is down enough to pull off upper radiator hose at intake then close drain, then remove two bolts at coolant housing and remove thermostate. clean gasket material from intake and housing and replace with new gasket and thermostate tighten bolts install hose fill rad with coolant water mix 50/50 and run engine with heat on floor until gets hot and you see coolant flowing in rad, install cap
