By the looks of your routing diagram, it looks like you could do it with a smaller belt, but I recommend you make sure there isn't something in the way of the new path the belt would take from the crank pulley to the water pump and power steering. The other thing to worry is if the contact arc with the water pump will be sufficient to avoid slippage. I don't know if anyone but the designer could tell you that for sure, but there are probably lots of old hats that have tried it and could tell you from experience what the odds are. I'm not one of them, sorry. Maybe anther Fixya guy will have some experience with this and chime in. Another thing you can do is go the the parts store and tell them you need the belt that goes with your car when it doesn't come with A/C. If there is such a configuration, ask to see the routing diagram and note whether or not they use a different routing and/or if they use an extra idler pulley in place of the compressor. If the latter is true, you will not be able to leave the compressor in place, but you may be able to pull it aside and wire it up using coat hangers, etc. I HAVE seen this done before. Let us know if you have more questions.

Why not just remove compressor and install a bypass pulley? $50 at most auto parts stores, and a breeze to install. That will eliminate all concerns and doubts, I know as I just did this on my 1996 Park ave...

What size serpentine belt to bypass ac compressor?

as there are engine running that have no ac fitted there will be belts to fit your car. Go to an auto parts shop that has a good selection of belts and they will have a catalogue with your belt listed.

The pully on the compressor is bad can i just leave off the compressor and bypass it with a different size belt

Yes. there are basically three ways:

1. Put in a new a/c compressor.

2. Try a smaller serpentine belt. If this model came also w/o a/c, that serpentine belt should work fine. If all Santa Fes came with a/c then like you were saying try a smaller belt. You might have to try different smaller belt sizes(as far as I know) until you really get it right, which is not easy.

3. See if they make an a/c compressor delete pully for your particular model. This is basically just a single standalone pully (dummy pully). Aftermarket companies do not make them for all models, but if they make it for yours, you can use the same serpentine belt w/o a compressor. The internet is the best place to check.

My compressor is bad on my 2000 pontiac sunfire 2.4, i am wanting to bypass the belt with a new (smaller belt) can u please tell me what size i will need

Hi,

Improve the Fixya.com experience for everyone by voting!

What you are looking for is called an 'air conditioner compressor bypass pulley'. Most chain auto parts stores have them in stock.

All you do is install the bypass pulley and use a shorter belt.

The only downside is the cost of $25-$40. That's about one-third the cost of a remanufactured unit and the labor is compatible.

All the best

Can I bypass the a/c compressor on my 1987 Cadila Sedan Deville

The car did not come without a/c so there isn't anything really available to get around your problem. If you are creative, you can make up a bracket and idler pulley to put in place of the compresor but you will need to experiment with belts to get the correct length.

On a 2001 saab 93 turbo can can you bypass the ac compressor or is there a bypass pulley

You can bypass both the AC compressor and the middle serpentine idler pulley with a 6PK1790. The middle pulley is bypassed by running the belt straight line from the upper rear serpentine idler straight to the power steering pulley, then over the water pump (the smooth pulley powered by the back side of the belt) and down to the engine drive pulley (harmonic balancer), bypassing the AC compressor) This works fine. On 9.5 models, the same basic idea, but a slightly different sized belt.
