If you had the 90,000 mile service done, and was performed to the service maintenance guide, not much is needed at 100K mils; oil change and tire rottion; replace the air filter.

The car idles fine but makes a whirring noise when accelerator is depressed. The car shifts into gear but doesn't move when given gas.

Transmission filter and fluid needs changing and, for 70 bucks, needs to be flushed. This maintenance should be done every 100000 miles, at most; I do mine at 70000.

I was driving and my van made a wierd noise, then would not drive. It will go in reverse, but nothing else. What is the average cost of a transmission repair?

This is a relatively old vehicle now and I guess it has done well over 100000 miles as most have.

You will be looking at fitting a rebuilt auto transmission and this will cost about 1500 dollars plus labour for removal and re-fitting. You can expect the all up cost to be around 2000 dollars plus.

Depending on the mileage and condition of your car, it may not be worth doing the work as the cost may exceed or equal the current market retail value of the vehicle when in working order. ("Trade in" value for a dealer trade will be much lower.)
You may well be much better off just putting the money towards a better low mileage car. Bear in mind that if you retain the vehicle you will incur other significant maintenance costs as age and mileage take their toll on all critical mechanical components.

US built vehicles of this type typically have a useful life of around 100000 miles in my view.
