Question about 1989 Ford Ranger
Coming on colder weather i would use a 5w30 oil,10w30 is fine but the thicker 5w30 will get you quicker lubrication to the top end when the engine is cold and the same protection when the engine has warmed up.

SOURCE: Which motor oil to use
10w-40 is going to be slight better for your 190,000 mile engine especially in this warm weather-and it would have a slightly better tendency at resisting leakage, again at higher temps.

SOURCE: should I use 10w30 or 10w40 oil
10w30 is heavier oil for hotter temp.
5w30 is usually good all year round on newer vehicles, specially in winter. But if you have excessive consumption use 10w30.
In older vehicles I do not recommend 5/30, with this, you need changed oil every 3000 miles for 2 oil changes then oil light came on having low oil pressure. To use 10/30 in winter and 10/40 in summer and have not had a problem.
