Question about 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190

2 Answers

Engine trouble Car has sat for quite awhile and is now hard to start, even in warm weather. It does not idle properly, continually stalls out until engine has warmed up. When the gas pedal is depressed, the engine seems like it is starving for gas or air. Also, the oil pressure gauge goes off the scale upon startup. I have replaced the spark plugs, fuel filter, oil, and removed the injectors which I soaked in diesel and then replaced. None of these things made any difference! PLEASE HELP

sulfer smell would be your egr valve not working. as far as stalling check the signal at crank sensor . also when your checking, maybe replacing the sensor check and make sure your harmonic balancer isn't broke. check rubber mounting surface for any melting and stuff like that..

Car does not want to start in cold weather, idles for 2 sec then quits this continues for about 10 to 15 min until engine gets warm then starts.

Sounds like you may have a bad coolant temp. sensor, scan your system for trouble codes, it may tell you, or just change it, at least you'll eliminate one possibility.

Stumbling Idle

possibly ajusting itsself. any severe weather/pressure changes in your area? and if so does your cars cpu compensate for this (thinks its at a different elevation etc then resets its idle proper after a certian time? I have heard of this but not sure if VW uses it) perhaps ask the service tech.

Car can stall in warm weather

Most likely if it is temperature related you may have a temperature sensor that is failing. The sensor may not be reacting properly to the actual temperature and causing the engine to run rich in warmer weather when a richer setting is not required.
You could have a sticking injector or sticking EGR valve or a faulty TPS switch, all can cause a rich condition and a poor running engine.
Is the service engine light on or come on at some point?
I would start by having the car scanned for trouble codes. You can have the scanned at no cost to you at your local Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts. Write the codes down and respond back.

Guessing gets expensive. Is the check engine lamp ON? If so, there will be stored trouble codes that are necessary to propely determine the cause of the stall. Catalytic converters do not unplug when cold, if they are plugged, they are plugged at all temps and vehicle runs worse the more gas you give it but may idle OK. Typically, stalls after warm are electrical failures, often computers, or solid state components that fail when they heat, and cool off over tyme. Ignition components are highly suspect generally, as are sensors. crankshaft position sensor especially is common to fail only warm on most vehicles.

1991 Plymouth Acclaim stalls

One of the more common problems with the 2.5L & 2.2L engines that suffered the symptoms your describing, such as, starts & runs good, then at any given time would just quit, not start, but after sitting a while, or by the time the mechanic gets to it, it starts right up, or you sit on the side of the road for 20 min. or half hour then away it goes for a while longer, then quits again down the road. There is a pick-up plate under the distributor cap & rotor, with the wiring plug coming from it. 90% of the time, it's defective, and cuts out especially, but not limited to, more often when weather is hot.
