Question about 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

2 Answers

Clicking sound when trying to start and no start (sometimes). I think it sounds like the starter is clicking. it is a lot like when the battery is going dead and does not supply enough power to engage the silinoid (sp?). sometimes it starts right up and other times it only makes a clicking sound. it is easier to start when warm. also after starting it gets a rough low idle and feels like it is going to stall. the idle sort of fixes itself quickly and then it runs ok. 2001 tahoe, 5.3 L, 4x4, ac, etc

Check starter if you have a silinoid mounted directly to the side of the case your starter may be on the way out, also battery could also have a bad cell (warm weather starts easier) trouble shoot start with cheap, rough idle check vacume hoses that run into the throttle body make sure there attached Particular the one that comes off the egr valve. good luck

Everything you are describing leads me to believe the battery is the culprit. Not enough storage in it after it sets, when it does start the alternator has to work at max to recover from the start making it idle rough, and the fact that it starts good warm tells me that you definitely need a battery. You can confirm this by boosting the truck the next time it starts "just clicking",if it goes with a boost then you will know for sure that the battery is done in.

My Honda accord (+200 000 miles) starts with no problems in the morning but then if you turn it off after driving for while it wont start and wont crank, any ideas?

If the humming noise is more like a whirring sound, you have a bad starter-motor solonoid or "bendix."

First - open the hood and have one of you listen while the other tries the starter. If the starter motor makes a whirring sound but nothing else happens, it is certainly the "bendix."

The same switch that turns the motor on, also engages an electro-magnet (the bendix) that throws the starter motor gear out and engages the teeth in the motors flywheel thus allowing the electric starter motor to turn the engine over. When the engine starts, it spins the starter motor fast enough that it mechanically throws the starter gear back into the starter even before you release the starter and disengage the magnet.

OK - now that you know what it is, what do you do about it.

While the bendix can sometimes be cleaned and work a while longer, sometimes a really long time longer, it is seldom worth the effort to remove the starter mechanism, take it apart, clean and lubricate (with the proper lubricants) and re-install just to see if that will work.

Usually, the best solution is a new or rebuilt starter. You can get one on Amazon, Autozone, NAPA, etc. and the price will likely vary a lot. You can get one from the dealer as well but it may cost more than the car (some exaggeration). Check prices - they vary a lot, sometimes by as much as 2-3x. I think the original starter motor on your car is a Denso, but there are lots of good aftermarket starters available.

Starters are pretty easy to change. I suggest looking on youtube. Just make absolutely sure you disconnect your battery before starting this.

Changing the starter motor (the bendix is attached and comes with a rebuilt one) takes about 30 minutes or so on that car.

Basically, you disconnect the wires, unbolt the old one, slide it out, slide in the new one, bolt in in, and reconnect the wires. - then reconnect the battery and start the car.

Good luck.

2004 dodge dakota sometimes starter just clicks then after a couple times it will start .starter tested good battery is good

That sounds like a starter selenoid problem. The selenoid is what the key switch engages to supply power to the starter. I am not sure of the location but many are on the fender well under the hood. I hope that helps.

Last week, my 1998 Lexus ES300 wouldn't start (clicking sound) and I thought it was the battery. I jump started it but noticed that it still made the clicking sound, for my first couple of tries, it did...

If car wont start and clicking sound is heard this is a battery related or starter related, if your car battery is in good condition (which I think it was) then the problem is your starter, have it check to confirm.
