Question about 1993 Isuzu Pickup

Pickup shuts off when stops at a traffic light. I increase the idle but now not a steady idle. it hunts up and down

    No luck so far, There is a component on the firewall which has vacuum hoses attached and electrical wires. It is labeled "IDLE" What is it's use and how do i check it?

Hi.

Ensure that there is no misfire. Check that the spark plugs are OK, ensure that there is fuel circulation, and check the air filter adn fuel cap (try removing it for testing).

Check the MAF and AIT sensors. This two sensors detect the air flow mass and the air flow temperature, and determine the amount of air to be mixed with fuel in the injection.
Both sensors are located in the air intake and are both common cause for idleing problem.

Check IAC (idle air control) valve. This opens and closes to let extra air in the mixture when the engine is idleing.

Check the vacuum system. The vacuum system is used to recirculate engine gases. If there is a vacuum leak you get a leaner mixture, resulting in engine running rough particularly at idle, when vacuum makes a bigger difference.

Other problems like a defective EGR valve for example, may affect idle, but will also create big problems when driving.

I think I have listed all problem. If possible pul OBD1 codes using a Mercedes OBD1 scanner (go to authorized garage). Standard OBD2 scanners do not work on this car.

    Errata: in my last comment talking about OBD codes I wrote Mercedes. I meant Isuzu, sorry about the typo. The rest of the solution is Ok.

    Pay particular attention to vacuum, this is tested reading pressure with gauge while heating or
    spraying with carb cleaner the vacuum hose (I use heating, but for safety
    reasons it should be done by a mechanic). If there is a leak you will
    see pressure going up.

    Most common reason for idle problem is air
    intake and sensor. Check temporary removing filter. Check the fuel
    circulation removing fuel tank cap. Check the sensors by disconnecting
    wires and seeing if that makes any difference. If that makes no
    difference, the sensor is bad. Clean the MAF sensor screen. This engine
    should have both MAF and iat. check them both. Check idle control cable
    and valve.

I have a nissan sentra 2000 model has idle hunt problem. replaced TPS IACV had computer remanned. when vehicle starts hunting can shut car off then restart idles normal. shut off again wait 2-4 minute


You check fuel pressure?

OBD Codes in ANY Module?

All Emission Monitors Run clear?

Look at a trouble chart for the IAC problem

I do not know what having the computer remanned means

If it was replaced or not, it may need an update flashed

Did you Google the problem & check nissan forums?

Slip into service bay at a dealer, from the outside & ask a
tech,I do that all the time,no one will stop you,your going to
parts dept (right & got lost)

Hey guy's, really anoying problem with my 97 T4 Transporter Air con...if the vans driving in motion everythings fine, although the second i stop at a set of traffic lights in turns itself off - it car'nt...


Some vehicles have got a sensor which increases the idle when air conditioner is switched on because of the extra load on the engine, this sensor may need adjusting, not sure where it is located exactly, sorry.

There are several things you can do. Make sure the engine is in good tune, replace the air filter, Air the tires up to 34 pounds air pressure to lessen the rolling resistance, How you drive is most important. Take off from traffic light and stop signs slowly. accelerate steady, don't be in a hurry to reach cruising speed, unless, of course, you are merging with fast traffic. Anticipate stops. Start slowing down sooner when coming to a stop sign or traffic signal. Coast on the downhill streets, and use the cruise control as much as possible. Don't waste gas warming up your vehicle in cold weather. It will warm up quickly while you are driving. Any time spent idling is zero miles per gallon.

If the car is having trouble maintaining idle (the tach dips and car dies) the common causes are the idle control valve and camshaft position sensors. The cam sensors failing will be indicated by a check engine light.

The ICV can removed and cleaned with good results (I think there is a write up on bimmerfest) or purchased new for about $100.

While you are in there check the intake boot that is Y shaped for cracks, it's prone to fail and will mess up your idle too.

Idle speed


This is because the computer compensates idle for when the A/C compressor is on or off. When the A/C compressor kicks in the computer will increase the engine idle to compensate for the drag in from the compressor. When the A/C is off it will decrease the idle to try and maintain a steady idle. If it is causing a high surge when the brakes are on it may be the IAC valve. If it is just slight it shouldnt be anything to worry about.
