Question about Lincoln Town Car
I had a Lincoln which did almost the same thing. On my car it was the Alternator shorting inside its casing. You can get a free test at Autozone or Oreillys on the car.
Now mine did not return to normal when I put it into Drive. So on your car you may have an Electrically shifted transmission. I would think if the Alternator passes its tests, you have a short in the shift control module which is shorting the Alternator and its Regulator inside..
My Speedometer would read 60mph and the Odometer would count the miles when the car was sitting still. I replaced a Digital dash to no avail and then found the Alternator was the reason my Speedo and Odometer were acting up. Immediately after changing the Alternator all problems stopped for me.
