Question about Chevrolet Avalanche

When turning switch to start auto,theauto just clicks. the battery shows 9.5 volts. disconnect the altinator and voltage goes back to 12.5 volts. what could cause this?

Clean the terminals on the battery,and the cable ends until they shine.

Why wont car start after charging battery its an au falcon


Check you battery connections. If they seem ok then get a volt meter and check voltage at the starter solinoid. If it is battery voltage then the small wire at the solinoid have a helper turn the key to start and you should have 9 to 12 volts. If this checks ok then you should have the starter checked. If no voltage the if is a automatic then check the nuteral safty switch. or ingnition switch.

I have a 2002 ford ranger that got a lot of water in the gas. I have drained the tank and added heat as well as replaced the filter. When I try to start it the battery gauge goes down to 0 and all I hear...


The alternator isn't charging , check B+ voltage hook-ups on the alternator . The heavy gage wire on the back of the alternator should have B+ voltage , vehicle not running . The fuel pump has nothing to do with it > terminal 3 at the connector should also have B+ voltage , So should terminal 1 . Charge the battery an get the vehicle running , put a volt meter on the battery post's , if there is about 13 to 14 volts running it is not charging !

I tried to start and all power goes out then I Disconnect positive and re connect there is power but it wont even click over and power goes out again


Your description does not rule out a bad battery. Make sure the cable connections are clean and connected correctly. Assuming this is all good check the voltage with a DC volt meter. A fully charged battery should test 12.85 Volts. If it is very near 12 or lower it is a week battery. With jumper cables or other means to get good voltage try and start it again. If is start you have a bad or week battery. If you get it to run check the voltage again while it is running. The meter should now read 13.5 -14.0 volts. If not above 13 volts it is not charging properly causing the battery to run down.....................

Wont start,no sounds no power,completely dead


You will need a volt meter to figure this one out. Battery voltage? Should be above 12 volts, and while you are trying to "crank" the engine over, if it's still over 12, you need to see if that power is getting to the starter motor. If it goes below 9 or 10 volts, you either have a bad battery, or the starter motor is shorted, or bad.
To test the starter, you should have a large wire going to the starter that has 12 volts all of the time from the battery. A smaller wire will have 12 volts only when the key is turned to "start". If you have these and a good ground, the starter motor is bad.

When i turn the key over it clicks but it wont start


I presume you have a good battery. The next thing I would check is the starter motor, then the ignition switch. If it doesn't start at all it may be the auto relay switch.

Car won't start


buy a cheap volt meter check voltage on both sides of the starter seleniod on the fenderwell if you have 12 volts on both sides while cranking test voltage at starter if you have 12 volts at starter with fully charged battery and it doesnt start you will need a starter it also sounds like you might need an alternator once you can get it started

Battery light is on


this light points to the alternator not providing enough voltage to keep the battery charged. most alternators should have 13.5 to 14.5 volts output. continuing to drive the vehicle like this will cause the battery to go dead. have your alternator tested on the caravan by your local dealer,repair shop or some auto parts stores can do it. a remanufactured alternator will cost around $100 to $200 plus diagnosis and installation.

The battery keeps going dead and even with the battery and fuses disconnected, the car is still showing 12 volts. Is this a fuse box problem?


If this happens even when the battery is disconnected - its likely the battery is no good..
Any car battery has around a 3 year life span give or take..

No power to starter


Hi Tonymcder;
Here's what happens in the start sequence when ypi turn the key.

When you turn the key, you should at least hear the starter solenoid click. When you turn the key the ignition switch sends 12 volts to the Starter solenoid ( really just a relay). The Solenoid closes and applies 12 volts (at a high current) to the starter motor to crank the engine. If you have a way to measure voltage, you should get 12 volts at the small terminal on the starter solenoid. The solenoid is mounted on the top of the starter motor.If you get
no voltage, probably an ignition switch If you get 12 volts and the starter doesn't crank the starter is probably defective. At this [point take a small hammer and tap the starter motor, not hard, just medium. Sometimes this will cause the starter motor to catch next time you turn the key. Best bet is to remove the starter motor (with solenoid attached) and take it to an Auto Zone type store where they can check it out for you. Be sure you disconnect the ground terminal of the battery before you attempt to remove the starter motor.

24 volt charging problems .2 12 volt batteries 1 battery 16volts and the other about 9-10 volts


A 12 volt battery is actually 13.2 volts fully charged. If you are reading 16 volts, you are probably getting extranious voltage from the system somewhere, especially if the vehicle is running when you check the voltage. The alternator will put out about 15-18 volts to charge the battery normally, and yours may put out 28-32 volts to charge them in series, but the batteries, when disconnected, should never read more than about 13.2 volts each. Typically, it will read about 12 1/2 volts when disconnected. COMPLETELY DISCONNECT BOTH OF THE BATTERIES. If you still read 16 volts when it is disconnected, you must have a bad meter because the battery can't produce that much voltage, no matter what. (Six 2.2 volt cells connected in series inside the case.) Put the meter on a known good battery on another car that is not running and see if you get the same reading. It sounds like the other battery is almost dead, regardless, and it sounds like your series/parallel switch may be malfunctioning. (That is the switch that puts the battery in series to run the 24 volt starter, then puts the batteries in parallel to run the remainder of the vehicle on 12 volts. This is all assuming that you have a diesel vehicle with a 24 volt starter and that is why you have two batteries.
