Its not the oil relief valve, since it only works when pressure is to high, and even then you dont lose all pressure.. look into the camshaft synchronizer having a broken drive gear at the bottom.they tend to break..working on one now that has this problem,so I know. luck to ya!

SOURCE: Replace heater core in 1988 Ford Ranger

allow the system to cool down

take radiator cap loose to release pressure

once pressure is released tighten cap

loosen clamps on the heater hoses in the engine compartment on the pass. side of firewall.

plug or cap off the heater core tubes to prevent spillage when you pull it into the truck

place a trash bag on floorboard in case spillage occurs

remove the five screws holding the heatre core access cover, three on top and two on bottom

carefully pull heater core back and down and remove it from the dash

install is reverse

Hope this helps

SOURCE: 2001 Ford Ranger, 4wd doesn't work. The 4wd light

There is obviously an issue with the transfer case. I doubt anything mechanical is wrong. Take it to your nearest autozone they can scan the code and give you a general idea of what to look for. 99.9% of the time they can help point you in the right direction. I had a smiliar problem with my exploder but mine was simply a shorted wire in the 4x4 high low selector switch assembly.

I purchased a 1988 Ford Ranger extended cab, the speedometer is off, the tires are 205/75 15's is this the correct size?

Is this a 4wd truck? The 4wd optional 15" tire is a 235-60-15, which means that with the tire size you listed, your speedometer will read 3.7% too low (at 60 mph indicated, you're actually going 62.3mph).

You will need to remove the covers on the steering column and remove the key unit. they are usually held in with a C-clip and a set screw if I remember correctly.

Ford ranger 1988 pistons are stuck

Why are they stuck? Is it from setting and there rusted up? or are they sezed up from lack of oil? If its rust just take some trans oil and pour some into each spark plug hole and let it set over night, and then put a socket on the harmonic and turn back and forth until it frees up. If its lack of oil its my best guess you better look for another engine.
