The alternator is adjustable, loosen it and slide it in to get slack on the belt.

ADJUSTMENT

Excessive belt tension will cause damage to the alternator and water pump pulley bearings, while, on the other hand, loose belt tension will produce slip and premature wear on the belt. Therefore, be sure to adjust the belt tension to the proper level.
To adjust the tension on a drive belt, loosen the adjusting bolt or fixing bolt locknut on the alternator, alternator bracket or tension pulley. Then move the alternator or turn the adjusting bolt to adjust belt tension. Once the desired value is reached, secure the bolt or locknut and recheck tension.

How to replace the tention idler pulley

using a breaker bar or some other tool w/ 1/2'' drive, insert into idler, there is a square hole, remove belt tension, donot remove belt, but lift belt off say the alternator, it would help if you hang the belt w/ wire or something so as not to let it drop. using a 15mm wrench, remove mounting bolt to idler, remove idler. better to replace the entire ilder w/ pulley, as an assymbly, they wear out like any thing else. when istalling new idler, must be positioned correctly. theres a finger which protrudes out of idler, this must be inserted @ engine sideof idler. reinstall bolt, tighten, reposition belt, using breaker bar 1/2" drive again, remove belt tension, so you can get belt over alternator pulley, release tension , done ! make sure belt is centered, and on properly according to belt rounting. when satisfied w/installation , start engine, check your work, remember to visulize existing idler, etc., etc., before you start this so you can put on the new one on exactly the way the old one was !!!!!!!!!!1

I need to replace the tensioner on my 96 mercury mystique and i need to know what to do

Hi, pick your engine from among the cases below. Use a wrench or 3/8 inch socket head to rotate the tensioner clockwise. While holding the tensioner, take the belt off the alternator pulley, then release the tension. Leave the belt on the rest of the pulleys. Remove the bolt holding the tensioner to the engine. Note the angle of the tensioner--there is usually some type of index pin to properly orient the tensioner angle on the engine. Replace with the new tensioner, ensuring the indexing pin is in it's hole and insert the bolt. Tighten the bolt well. Turn the tensioner clockwise again and put the belt back on the alternator pulley. Release the tensioner. Start the engine and observe the belt to insure it is properly driving the pulleys and is centered on each one. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using Fixya.

How to move the serpentine belt tension pulley on a 2001 chevrolet suburban in order to replace the alternator? thanks

You don`t have to remove the pulley itself.Use a light and look at the tensioner. You will see a square hole on the front of the tensioner. All you need to do is put your 3/8 ratchet in this hole and relieve the tension. Then just remove the belt off the alternator and leave it lay on the other pulleys. You don`t need to remove it completely. This will make it easier when installing it.Hope this helps.Good luck.

I need a diagram to see were my tension-er is

I don't have the figure for your car, but the below figure shows how to remove the A/C belt.
the other belts should have a simple slot in the bracket for adjusting. If you have more questions, let us know.

How do you remove the alternator on a 2.7L? How

To loosen the belt look for a pulley that isn't running anything. That is your tension pulley and somewhere either in the center of the pulley or arm the pulley is bolted to there will be a square hole that is the same size as a 1/2" drive socket. Find your 1/2" socket and put it in that hole and either in tightening or loosening position you should be able to move the pulley so the tension on the belt loosens up so you can take it off the pulley. then remove the bolts of the alternator and the wire plug and you got it whipped.
