HAVE A 2001 DODGE DURANGO WITH LIMITED SLIP. HAD THE DIFF FLUID CHANGED 3 YRS AGO. HAVE HAD A WHINING NOISE WHEN BACKING UP AND FELT A TIRE DRAGGING FOR A SEC WHEN I NEEDED TO MAKE A LEFT/RT TURN FROM A STOP. I RECENTLY CALLED THE GEAR LUBE SHOP AND THEY COULD NOT TELL ME IF I NEEDED A SPECIAL ADDITIVE AT THE TIME OF FLUID CHANGE. THEY ADDED THEY FLUID ( FREE) AND ALL NOISE IS GONE. NOW THE PROBLEM BEING..IS THEIR DAMAGE DONE TO MY REAR GEAR EVEN THOUGH THE NOISES ARE GONE??

SOURCE: Rear end noise on 2002 Dodge ram 1500

If you have a positraction differential, you need posi additive along with the new lube. After it's in, take it to a parking lot and make tight left turns then tight right turns to get the lube between the posi plates. That usually frees it up unless there is an actual mechanical problem in the diff.
good luck!

1998 dodge durango. howling noise differential.

time to pull the diff centre as the noise is from incorrect positioning of the crown wheel and pinion. This happens from failed pinion bearings or side carrier bearings.. Could be lack of oil or the wrong oil if it is a limited slip diff.

My '01 dodge 4x4 diesel had a simular problem turned out to be the dust cover or backing plate that had somehow moved probably due to expansion and contracting from the heat!
