Question about 1997 Cadillac DeVille
I have a problem with my Cadillac Deville 96 model. While driving, the steering wheel, all of a sudden locked on me. In other words, it would NOT turn right or left. I then stopped the car while the engine was still on. I tried and tried, yet no luck. Co-incidentally, I also then got a message flashing on the panel stating 'Battery NO CHARGE' . After about 20 minutes(while I was waiting for the tow truck), the battery died as well and my car wouldn't start either. I don't think the two problems are related, yet, I decided to ask the experts here. SO... question 1> Are the two problems related > question 2 > What can I do to get the steering wheel turn (considering that my car engine wouldn't even start now) ? Need some ideas here. Thanks
The problem is the serpentine (Drive Belt) belt.Theeem belt is broken or slipping. An early detections is the power steeirng may seem tough turn at times. If you notice slight steering probles. Check the driving belt! Also, check the idler pulley for wear, if the idler pulley bad replace the pulley before putting the belt on!

I have a 1980 Coupe Deville. While have the tires change at tire shop they some how locked my steering wheel. Now it won't unlock. Try pulling the wheel hard to the left while trying to turn it on, No the key or wheel would turn. How do i fix this and bring my car home?

I agree its a really scary thing to have happen to you, i have a 2002 ford focus and as well wen the road is wet i get scarred because i already know whats going to happen it just completely locks up it gets really hard and then it starts making that wierd screeching sound. I have things to do and it is pourin rain out and i cant do anythin cause one my car does dat and 2 how am i goin to put my sons life at risk that somone might hit me cause of the problem.

I truly believe what 9holemike mentioned is correct. I have the same problem on my car, My wife told me this morning that it also happened to her on Friday. Both friday and today were rainy days and it only happens when she is on turns. The steering belt or pully might be slipping and might be the reason for it. I had a van years ago that the serpentine belt broke, and i had such a hard time getting out of public parking and to a mechanic a mile away. going to mechanic this weekend for my issue.

1999 sl2 manual when my cars off it shifts fine i came to a stop sign an i could not get into any gear its makes a rumbling kinda sound just when i press the clutch in stops as i release it

I was having this completely lock up problem too and it was scary. It seemed to happen when I drove on wet roads. I took it to the dealership and here is what they said. "oh, we have known about this since 1985 it is a defect. They told me that if the powersteering belt(or some belt anyways) get old and when it gets wet it slips causing the steering to lock up. He said I need to make sure the belts didnt get old. (he also stated that one of his customers had a metal deflector specially built to help deflect the water. Soooo.... my question is why hasnt this problem been address SINCE 1985by GM?? I have also taken this car EVERY time for it regular maintainence and they were SUPPOSED to be replacing my worn belts!! I mean it is REALLY scary to have the steering completely lock up when making a turn!! My next car will be a Toyota!

would say that your belt or belts broke and that is why you could steer the
car and it died and would not restart

Most likely a head gasket failure. I would pressurize it first!

Hello. The most likely cause of your problem is that the heater/AC relay is on it's last legs. This easy to change. Go to any auto parts store to obtain the part, and ask them to show you where it is located [under the dash]. Then just unplug the old and plug in the new.
