Steering wheel locked while driving

I have a problem with my Cadillac Deville 96 model. While driving, the steering wheel, all of a sudden locked on me. In other words, it would NOT turn right or left. I then stopped the car while the engine was still on. I tried and tried, yet no luck. Co-incidentally, I also then got a message flashing on the panel stating 'Battery NO CHARGE' . After about 20 minutes(while I was waiting for the tow truck), the battery died as well and my car wouldn't start either. I don't think the two problems are related, yet, I decided to ask the experts here. SO... question 1> Are the two problems related > question 2 > What can I do to get the steering wheel turn (considering that my car engine wouldn't even start now) ? Need some ideas here. Thanks

I am having kind of the same thing happening in my 2004 Cadillac DeVille. The steering locks up on wetroads. It also is making a screeching sound. I brought it to the dealer, and they said they couldn't find anything wrong. It is extremely scary!

The problem is the serpentine (Drive Belt) belt.Theeem belt is broken or slipping. An early detections is the power steeirng may seem tough turn at times. If you notice slight steering probles. Check the driving belt! Also, check the idler pulley for wear, if the idler pulley bad replace the pulley before putting the belt on!

I truly believe what 9holemike mentioned is correct. I have the same problem on my car, My wife told me this morning that it also happened to her on Friday. Both friday and today were rainy days and it only happens when she is on turns. The steering belt or pully might be slipping and might be the reason for it. I had a van years ago that the serpentine belt broke, and i had such a hard time getting out of public parking and to a mechanic a mile away. going to mechanic this weekend for my issue.

I was having this completely lock up problem too and it was scary. It seemed to happen when I drove on wet roads. I took it to the dealership and here is what they said. "oh, we have known about this since 1985 it is a defect. They told me that if the powersteering belt(or some belt anyways) get old and when it gets wet it slips causing the steering to lock up. He said I need to make sure the belts didnt get old. (he also stated that one of his customers had a metal deflector specially built to help deflect the water. Soooo.... my question is why hasnt this problem been address SINCE 1985by GM?? I have also taken this car EVERY time for it regular maintainence and they were SUPPOSED to be replacing my worn belts!! I mean it is REALLY scary to have the steering completely lock up when making a turn!! My next car will be a Toyota!
Hope this helps.

I would say that your belt or belts broke and that is why you could steer the car and it died and would not restart

SOURCE: heater on 96 cadillac deville concours doesnt turn on

Hello. The most likely cause of your problem is that the heater/AC relay is on it's last legs. This easy to change. Go to any auto parts store to obtain the part, and ask them to show you where it is located [under the dash]. Then just unplug the old and plug in the new. Regards, Joe PS kindly rate my answer. thank you.

My lock went out on my steering wheel

went out?
the ignition key and steering lock are all in one place (part)
if the steering wheel wont unlock the operators guide shows what to do.
you wiggle the steering, as you wiggle the key to unlock.
if tires are against the carb, this can be very hard to do.
ask hubby to do that. (yank wheel hard )

1987cadallic deville steeringwheel

Hi,

Usually, vehicles with tilt adjust steering, have a small lever just under the steering wheel column. Pulling this lever out, unlocks the wheel. Pushing lever back in, locks the wheel.

Have a look for a lever of this type and once you find it, have your Dad hold the steering wheel at his preferred position, then push the locking lever back up, to lock the wheel in place.

Let me know if you resolve this.....

Cheers,

Just want to know if the 1999 deville cadillac is fronmt or real wheel drive

All Cadillac Deville models are FWD (front wheel drive) after 1985. The only RWD models made were the 85-92 Brougham, 92-96 Fleetwood Brougham, the 97-02 Catera, the 2004+ STS and 2003+ CTS.

Remove steeringing wheel in cadillac 1988 sedan deville ?

The steering wheel should be turned so the wheels are turned straight ahead before you start
the work. And the wheel should be locked so you can align the wheel correctly when
re-installing.

1) Take off the two 8mm on back of steering wheel that hold on the horn pad. Twist and detach the
connector/wire that goes to the horn. Remove the horn pad.

2) Remove the nut and retainer holding on the wheel.

3) Use a steering wheel puller to remove the wheel. You can get a loaner steering wheel puller from
autozone.

So why are you removing the steering wheel? Let me guess, the wheel is loose?!

Need to replace turn signal switch 93 cadillac deville

First do you have a sterring wheel puller. Can't remove the steering wheel without one. Quite an involved job including snaking the electrical connector end through the steering column. I wouldn't recommend it to the novice

Unable to insert key into ignition switch

Try this pull the steering wheel as far to the left as possible and while it is in this position try to insert key. Sometimes the steering wheel lock will get in a bind and prevent the key from being inserted. Hope this helps!!!
