Question about 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Replaced the water pump, thermostat, intake seals (top and bottom), had the radiator inspected and flushed, checked the fuses, and took it to the local auto parts store and ran the electrical test which came up negative, and the car still runs hot!!!!!! 2001 chevy malibu. what is the problem????

You can do a few quick checks: turn your heater on full blast in side the car and start the engine. As the engine heats up, you should feel heat blowing inside the car. If not, coolant is not circulating. No circulation can be caused by an air bubble caught in the radiator after it was flushed. Look inside the radiator to check the coolant level. It should be within an inch of the top. Don't remove the radiator cap when it is hot, you can be burned by steam. Leave the cap off and start the engine. As it heats up you should see movement in the coolant if you rev up the engine. If you find no circulation, the new thermostat may be bad or not opening at the proper temperature. Check the fan to be sure it is coming on as the engine heats up. The fan is electric and is designed to cycle on and off to maintain a steady temperature in the coolant. If it is not operating properly, engine will overheat. Hopefully when the radiator was flushed, the fins were also "blown out" to allow good airflow through the radiator, if not clean the fins with a good blast of a garden hose until all the dirt, dust and bugs are gone. These are simple tests. If the engine has overheated, there is a good chance you may have warped the engine head. This is beyond the repair capabilities of most drivers. Again, simple tests are: pull your oil dipstick. If the oil is frothy and the color of hot chocolate, you have water in the oil. If you can see spots of water clinging to the dipsitck, you have water in the oil. Check your new coolant. If there is oil in the coolant, (frothy brown layer or sheen on top of coolant) you have oil in the coolant. Either condition indicates you have a blown head gasket caused by warping the head by overheating. Blown head gaskets often cause overheating. The fix is to remove the head, have it planed and rebuilt and reinstall with new head gasket. This procedure is complex and expensive. Do it yourself requires a head gasket kit and planing and rebuilding the head. Expect that repair to exceed $600.00. Good luck, hopefully you will find a circulation problem.

Message light states that engine is overheated and engine must be shut off


The loud fan is probably normal for your car but it is possible the fan blades are touching the cowling as it spin or the bearings are on the way out. For the moment, don't worry about the noise because at least it is working and you need to concentrate on the cause of overheating. Assuming you have enough coolant in the system it sounds like a recirculation problem. This could be caused by any of the following:
  • Blocked flow which could be a pipe, radiator or where the coolant flows inside the engine
  • A faulty water pump, so not pumping round system
  • A faulty thermostat that is not opening at temperature
There are several things you can do and is simply a case of eliminating the causes one at a time.
Start with the thermostat and remove it from its housing and either leave it out (for now) and refit the housing to seal the system. See if that helps because coolant is pumped around the engine at start up and once hot the thermostat opens and allows it to flow through the radiator to be cooled as air passes the radiator. That eliminates the thermostat as the cause if it still overheats.
Next, disconnect the bottom and top hoses from the radiator and try to flush through the radiator with a hosepipe and see if there is a flow through it to eliminate a blocked radiator.
Then do the same to flush out the engine.
I always prefer to flush from the bottom and overflow out of the top wherever possible as this lifts any blockages and air pockets, but if it won't flow one way then try the other way. From top to bottom flow, you can't be sure that the flush water is just trickling through as gravity will let it run downwards anyway.
If everything flushes properly and running without a thermostat still causes overheating then it may well be a water pump problem.

have you tried flushing out your radiator. there may also be air lock

I've changed the head gasket (top overhaul),the thermostat,the radiator cap and serviced the radiator where the water is flushed out and replaced and checked for no leaks but still my trooper over


You have a water leak from the sound of it or water is draining from over heating. Things to check for, leaks at the hose connections, leaks at heater connections on engine, leaks at water pump and any leaks at head gasket. Assuming there are no leaks check or replace or adjust your water pump belt. Take the thermostat out and run the engine without out it. If the problem is solved replace the thermostat recommended for you car. You can also have it checked as well.

I have replaced the engine coolant and my blazer still overheats


You just have to keep checking. Try a new thermostat. Also make sure you have a good radiator cap with a good seal, cause the seal pressurizes you coolant up to about 15 psi. Check if circulation is good: engine running at normal operating temp. (to make sure your thermostat is open), radiator cap off, squeeze top radiator hose closed(use gloves, if necessary) then release, and look in radiator to see if coolant surges when hose is released. Feel your bottom hose. It should be warm to hot, If it's cold, your radiator might need flushing. Check your water pump for signs of leakage (whitish deposits around bottom of pump.) If all checks out, you need to consider a compression test to see if your head gasket needs replacing. Good luck.

Engine violently overheating. New thermostat, new radiator cap, just did a flush, and has new coolant. What should I check next


Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. You need to make sure your fans are working properly. If they are not, check the fuses. If the fuse is good, test the fan and the wires to the fan for current. You could have a bad water pump or water pump impeller. It may be a bad head gasket. Make sure the radiator is working correctly. Make sure that there are no leaks on the engine. Start the vehicle and inspect the engine for leaks. Check your oil and make sure coolant is not inside it. It is possible for it to leak inside.

How do i change a thermostat on a 1996 mercury sable and whre is it located


Thermostat-follow the upper radiator thick hose to the thermostatic housing. Removal & Installation 3.0L (2V) To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the engine cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Remove the three thermostat housing bolts.
  4. Remove the thermostat O-ring seal.
  5. Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install thermostat and o-ring seal.
  2. Install thermostat housing bolts; torque to 9 lb-ft (12 Nm).
  3. Refill cooling system.
  4. Warm-up vehicle and check for leaks.
  5. Top off cooling system.
3.0L (4V) To Remove:
  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet adapter.
  3. Remove the bolts, the water outlet adapter and thermostat. Discard the O-ring seal.
To Install:
  1. Clean the sealing surfaces.
  2. Install the thermostat with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts to 89 in-lb (10 Nm).
  3. Refill the cooling system.
  4. Warm-up the vehicle and check for leaks.
  5. Top off the cooling system.
3.4L (SHO) To Remove:
  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2. Remove battery.
  3. Remove power distribution box.
  4. Remove battery tray.
  5. Disconnect upper radiator hose and place it out of the way.
  6. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet connection.
  7. Remove the two mounting bolts and remove the water inlet connection.
  8. Remove the O-ring seal and thermostat from the water pump.
  9. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
To Install:
  1. If necessary, install a new O-ring on the inlet connection.
  2. Install the thermostat in the water pump and install the inlet housing. Tighten the bolts to 71-106 lb-in (8-12 Nm).
  3. Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection.
  4. Install the upper radiator hose.
  5. Install battery tray.
  6. Install the power distribution box.
  7. Install the battery.
  8. Refill the engine with coolant.
  9. Start the engine and allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens. Check for leaks.
  10. Stop the engine. Allow the engine to cool and top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

The coolant in the reservoir boils out of vent tube and overheats the engine. The temp gauge also dropped to C instead of going to H when this took place. Is this syptomatic of a water pump failure,...


Refill the coolant system reservoir when cold. Ensure the cap has a good seal and is tightened down properly With the hood raised, restart and allow the engine to idle until running temperature. 1) No agitation should be seen in the reservoir water, certainly no stream of bubbles or violent movement. If there are violent signs then this points to a blown head gasket. 2) The top rubber hose from the engine to the radiator at some point should become hot. Keeping checking the temperature gauge from time to time to see if the temperature is rising. If there is no temperature gauge response then there is something wrong with the gauge circuitry. 3) at some point here the fan (if electric or clutch operated should become engaged. If the electric fan never comes on either the temperature sensor is faulty, the fan fuse or solenoid relay are not functional or the fan motor is blown. 4) Within a few more minutes the lower hose exiting from radiator to the engine should also become hot. If these two events happen then your pump is circulating the water and the thermostat is functioning.If the top hose does not become hot you need to check your thermostat. If the top hose does become hot but the bottom one does not, even after quite a while, then either the pump is a fault or there is blockage; maybe due to sludge in the radiator core or pipes. To check the thermostat simply remove it and drop it into a pan of boiling water. Immediately you should see the thermostat pop open. Take the pan of water off the heat and watch the thermostat. After about five minutes when the water has begum to cool the thermostat should pop closed again. These events are not subtle so if they are not seen it is likely that a new thermostat will be needed. In the event the system is blocked simply remove coolant hoses and use a high pressure hose to flush the radiator and system clear of sludge. If there is air trapped in the system try putting the interior heater on to full to help flush them out. In an emergency putting on the interior heater can assist the main engine cooling.

remove coolant.remove thermostat remove bottom radiator hose to water pump.put a empty container under the radiator.take a water hose put it where thermostat goes flush out the rust in block.watch the water as it come out the water pump .if stream water is small keep flushing until you get a study sream of clear water. also flush out radiator. lower water pressure dont flush radiator it with high water pressure you could burst it. make clean the over flow jug .make sure it not stopped up.put in a new thermostat and radiator pressure cap. fill radiator with half antifreeze and half water.bleed the coolant system.
