Question about 1986 Buick Somerset

3 Answers

Somerset Alternator I just bought a 1986 Buick Somerset used for $100, and I was told it needed a new alternator, So i picked on up at a junk yard took it to shucks and they told me it was in good working condition. So put it in. and now its not charging my Battery. I had my uncle take a look at it, and he is stumped at the moment too, I think it could be a fuse but Im not sure which one powers the Alternator, Anybody got any ideas why it wouldnt be charging? I know the Battery is good. Additional Details - If you don't have an answer that is in anyway helpful then don't bother to submit an answer, it just wastes my time and yours. Thanks

I have a 1985 Buick Regal Somerset with similar problem. I solved issue by purchasing a high output alternator that would charge battery and power all accesories better. This helped along with changing the size of alternator pulley. If voltage output fall lower than 12 volts the engine may die. This is a major problem with this vehicle. Thanks lou

The voltage regulator is internal on that alternator. Take the alernator back off and take it autozone or advance and have them bench test it to see if its good or not. That model car doesnt have a fuse for the alternator either and the regulator is internal on that model. Thats a standard sg gm alternator. those above stores do not charge for testing it for you. another quick way if you have a volt meter is black end of volt meter to the negative battery cable and the postive end of the meter to the thick red wire on the alternator that you had to put the nut on. then with car running that should show 13 to 14 volts. If not, suspect that alternator. But try the free check on it before going through too much more grief with that. if you had it tested. take the whole car to the autostore and ask them to check it while the car is running, Autozone and advance both have the machine they will take out to the car and check it for free. Otherwise, get a volt meter and check it as I said. If the alternator is putting out, then you have a bad cable or the 'field' wire is bad.

I have a 1989 Volvo 740 gle sedan i bought a battery but it will not hold charge, but it did last me 6 hours but sadly when night time came around and i turned on the head lights the car died. i got i jump...

Hello, The alternator is responsible for charging the battery. From what you have explained it sounds like a bad alternator. I may go to the person you bought the car from and ask to see documentation such as a receipt of purchase of the alternator. If he bought a new or refurbished alternator then it is defective and the place it was bought from should refund or replace it. If he got one used off another car or perhaps a junk yard then "new" can be an overstatement.

Windshield washer sprayer doesn't work

1986 Buick Somerset

Here is the diagnostic check list in order of checking;
) Is fluid in the tank ?
) Are nozzles unclogged ?
) Is the fuse for pump good ?
) Do you hear a buzzing sound from the sprayer motor when activated ? If not, you need a new motor. Replacement motor is not too expensive.
