Hugh from Chicago, I had my transmission rebuilt,I tore first one up in snow ,put in bone yard tranny lasted 18 months. Now i HAD A REAL REBUILD DONE CAR IS PURRING. Note: The shift issue, tap on the top of the shifter I use my club,it works everytime. It is currenly 5 degrees f outside. When it warms, I am am going to disconnect that interlock, that locks it into park, it is under the console. Another tip replace the shifter bulb with an LED cluster. I am an electricain , industrial type, I like to troubleshoot, this shift issue will agrivate. Again tap on thetop of the shifter, the linkage probably not getting proper voltage. Hugh McSheffrey_ Chicago,IL ps _ I have 169k on mine, I will drive it until it blows up sweet revenge ?

1999 ford escort, parking lights don't go to off, brake lights stopped operating

Could be caused by stuck contacts inside the park lamp relay . The brake light problem could be caused by a faulty brake light switch . This switch is on top of the brake pedal . Check for B+ voltage with a voltmeter before replacing the switch .
The park lamp relay is in the relay box Relay Box

I have a 2000 ford escort zx2 and the shifter won't engage unless I use the override button. What is causing my shifter not to work?

There is a solenoid lock which works on the brake light circuit, if the brake lights are working it is possible the solenoid has packed up. Need to check it's operation.

1998 ford escort cannot shift out of park. And has no brake lights. The fuses and bullbs seem to be ok,also the two switches on the brake peddle.

check the brake switch above pedal and brake light relay in engine compartment relay box.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6053280-lights_out_lights_not_out_bulbs_ok . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

2001 ford escort stuck in park lever won't move starts normally

If it wont move into gear, the safety switch is malfunctioning. You can take the plug out of the hole on the upper right side of the console just to the right of the gear shift lever. put a philips screwdriver in the hole and press down. this will manually release the gear shifter mechanism.
