Question about 2004 Volkswagen Passat
The rattle would seem to be a failed CV joint. This would be most noticeable when cornerinig under power. In severe cases it will happen on straightline accelleration.
Multifunction display lit indicates safe mode. Tiptronic is probably not available as well. Have the transmission code cleared with a VAG-COM to see if this resolves the problem.
If not replace the multifunction switch on the drivers side of the transmission. You can DIY this job if you dont mind getting under the car. You'll need a jack, axle stands, socket set, hex set(allenkeys), Torx set (just the T-25 or T30), a VAG-COM and a new switch of course. Shop around for the switch, prices vary hugely.
When replacing the switch note the orientation of the toothed inner bit and set the new switch the same.
