It can only tell you what the sensors are reading and compare them to what they should read. It can also tell you any trouble codes that were recorded by the computer, even if the check engine light is not on. A good scanner can read the O2 sensors over time with the engine running. This is about all you can get in terms of performance. It cannot tell you horsepower ot torque--anything like that. Am I answering your question? Feel free to ask more.

Engine light on

Barbara,
I will make the assumption that you are not mechanically inclined, forgive me if you are and trust me when I say you do not need to be to perform this task.

First locate a parts store near you, here are links to locate,
O'Reilys
Napa
Autozone

Call them and ask if they have a scanner for your vehicle. They will let you use it free at the store. Under the drivers side dash you will find a place to plug it in. Have a pen and paper to write down the codes that will appear on the scanner.

With the engine off plug in the scanner. Turn vehicle on and watch the screen of scanner, it will flash codes, write them down. Turn off vehicle, unplug scanner and then give the codes to the counter person. He should be able to tell you what they refer to. Some scanners actually tell you what the problem is along with the code.

I hope the problem is minor which it sounds like it is since you came here for an answer and didn't have it towed to a repair facility.
Best of luck, and hope this helps.

The check engine soon light came on at the 146.000.00 mark what do that mean.

when the check engine soon comes on it doesn't point to a specific problem ,it telling you that there is an issue with something that is effecting the overall performance of your truck, without you even noticing any difference in performance. best thing to do is to have a diognostic check done on your truck and that will produce a specific code that will point to the problem an take the guess work out of it .you can even buy a code scanner and do it yourself sometime its a pretty easy fix.

Check engine light came on

Hello opyus2
The check engine light will come on if the power control module(PCM) receives a signal from one of
the sensors(or no signal at all) that there is a problem in one of the cars systems, such as engine
performance/emissions/charging system, or a bad sensor can do it. I would take the car to autozone and they will hook up an OBDII scanner and tell you which system has the problem, and it's free. Once we know the code we will be in a better posistion to help you cure the problem.
Hope this was helpful.

My check engine light is on. How do I turn it off?

On the 1997 Lincoln Town Car, it has an OBD-II computer on it where an OBD-II scanner can clear the engine light by erasing the codes, after repairs are performed on the circuit that originally tripped the check engine light.

One can buy an OBD-II engine scanner for under $100 from Sears or Walmart, or a local auto parts store, or even Ebay.com or Amazon.com.

Service engine soon, what should I do? Please let me know.

Take it to your local Autozone and have them put a pocket scanner on it. This will tell you what the malfuntion is. Ask them to reset the warning light so that you can be sure that it is really a malfunction. If it comes back have whatever service is required performed.

Perform service light on what does it mean?

If it is only "perform service", this is likely your mileage counter telling you to get an oil change. If it was a "check engine light" it would be amber in color and would require use of a scanner to acquire codes and check for faults. Here's how to reset:
On a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo if the "Perform Service" light is in the middle of the dash Simply press the "SET" button until the display shows the "0 miles to service", Then hold the other button below it down until it resets to "3000".

Engine light is on steady not blinking in 2005 chevy aveo

There is a 'hard' code stored in the computer which can seriously adversely affect engine performance. Have a parts store scan the code for free, or buy and OBD-II Scanner ($98 or so plus tax at Walmart) of your own which can tell you in plain English what system is giving your car engine trouble.

some of the auto parts stores like autozone will check the code for you for free so you don't have to buy a scanner.

We have a 1998 chevrolet suburban 4wd the check engine light is on

The first thing to do is have someone hook up a diagnostic scanner to check the codes. Some auto parts stores will do this for free, or you could purchase a basic scanner and do it yourself. Once you have the codes you'll have a better idea of what repairs need to be performed. Unfortunately without more info, it's hard to tell why the light is on. Hope this helps.
