Question about 2005 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I have a 2005 Ford Taurus with 96,600 miles. While driving on the highway, the car started blowing hot air from the a/c, then 10 miles down the road it started emitting an electrical fire smell but no smoke. I pulled over, shut the engine off, then opened the hood but couldn't find anything burning. I restarted the car and checked to see that all the pulleys were turning and that the belt was not slipping. I turned the a/c back on and rechecked the belt and pulleys. Everything checked fine and when I reentered the car the a/c was working normally. A few days later I was on the highway with it again and suddenly started hearing a terrible grinding/growling noise from the engine compartment. I shut off the a/c and the noise stopped, so I drove the rest of the trip without the a/c. The next morning when I started the car the grinding/growling noise immediately started from the engine compartment. I opened the hood and the sound was most definitely coming from the pulleys. I turned the car off and checked all the pulleys. The top idler pulley wiggled so I bought a new one and had my husband replace it and the belt. Without the belt on, the top idler pulley and the a/c compressor pulley were the only two that had any play in them. However, the a/c compressor pulley had only a small fraction of play when wiggled. So to get to my problem, the grinding/growling noise is still coming from that area. Could the a/c compressor be the culprit after all even though the a/c works just fine? Or did the idler pulley need to be tightened to a certain torque? I am greatfull for any advice you can give. Thank you so much! Jennifer Greve

I am now being told that the problem is with the A/C clutch pulley. The A/C still works, but the noise is terrible. I have parked the car for now so I don't end up replacing the A/C compressor. As soon as we get the pulley replaced, I will let you know if that's the culprit.

If you haven't, check your cooling liquid to see how full the resovoir is, or maybe the thermostadt is sticking (but I doubt that)

Drive bad thermostat

Sounds like thermostat is stuck open. What brand did you use? If it's a fail safe, that's your problem. They usually go to fail safe even without an overheat condition right away and lock full open.

1999 ford taurus se 155thousand miles, 3.0 V6

sounds like your thermostat is stuck open, if its takes a very long time for the engine to warm up and you get nothing but cold air from your heat then thats the first place i would start.

2005 ford taurus se has the emissions light on and in nov 2008 when this light came on and my car completely died after turning the air on I had to have the a/c compressor fixed, the alternator, serpintine...

Well let me tell you this.

2 days ago my a/c didn't put out cold air. It worked the next morning & evening and this morning and almost all the way home tonight.

My 2005 Tarus just did the same thing tonight, emissions light came on while I was going about 80mph. I got over to the right lane and slowed down to 60 and made it off the highway.

As I proceeded home it was acting like it would stall at the red lights but didn't, until I pulled into the driveway (lucky day?).

Bottom line is my emissions light is on and the car won't start.

I will update you asap., on my repair when i take it in tommorrow.

Poor gas mileage on 2008 Ford taurus

Are you using the correct grade of fuel.
Manufacturers claim that a car will do 28 to the gallon.
This is done under ideal conditions at a constant speed on a rolling road.
Wind, hills, overtaking and tire pressures will decrease fuel mileage.
Your car is ok. Don`t expect much more unless you want to drive at 56mph
good luck
